Villebois Lavalette - a fortified town in a commanding location

Villebois Lavalette may only be a small town, but its enviable location on a hilltop marks it out as special. With its natural defensive position and fortifications that made it almost impregnable and much desired throughout its history, it is also quite charming. With lovely views, a covered market hall and its heritage features, Villebois Lavalette is a gem waiting to be discovered.

Life in Villebois Lavalette

Known as a market town, thanks to its vibrant little Saturday morning market, Villebois is in all other terms more of a village. Its rural setting and gentle pace of life embody the essence of French country living. For all its diminutive size, though, the little town has good amenities, with banks, bakeries, a pharmacy, a builder's merchants, a good sized supermarket and a tourist office where you can pick up information about local events and places to visit. There's also a hotel, a restaurant, doctors, and a dentist. That pretty much covers all everyday needs. However, larger towns such as Angoulême are only a short drive away.

Heritage to discover

The town has a long and interesting history, having its roots in Roman times. The most important heritage features include the town walls, the 16th century covered market hall and a 17th century sundial. The market hall is a registered historical monument.
