If you visit the pretty little village of Villefagnan in early summer, you will be bowled over by the golden glow of the sunflowers that are grown all around the area. The village has a picturesque location, with its lake, working windmill and mellow stone houses, and presents a picture perfect scene of rural life in the Charente. Its location, slightly to the south-east of central Poitou-Charentes, makes it a perfect spot for enjoying the best of western France too, with easy access to the Atlantic coast to the west, the Dordogne to the south and the green pastures and lakes of the Limousin to the east.
Villefagnan makes no grand claims to important monuments or historic sights, but it is typically Charantaise, authentic in every way. The village has a pretty mediaeval church at its heart, and a lovingly renovated 18th century working windmill, a lake for those hot summer days when you want a swim, or to do a spot of relaxing fishing, and a charmingly higgledy piggledy collection of old stone houses.
The village is well equipped to cope with most everyday needs, and offers shops, including supermarkets and boulangeries (so essential for that fresh baguette or croissants in the morning!), butchers, doctors and hairdressers. There is also a post office, chemist and more. There are several small bars where you can try out your fledgling French on the friendly locals, and on the edges of town you can buy wonderful fresh produce from a goat's cheese farm and an organic farm.
There's a market twice a week too, on Tuesdays and Fridays, making French village life about as idyllic as it gets! For those wanting to be slightly more active, the village has a tennis court, football and rugby pitches, a lake where you can swim and fish, as well as a riding school.
The Charente and its surrounding departments are rich in historic towns, beautiful and varied countryside, coast and even theme parks, so there is something to suit every member of the family when it comes to days out and sporting and leisure activities. Around the area cycling is popular, as are the wonderful country walks.
Visit Poitiers, with its historic centre and amazing Futuroscope theme park, head for the coast and the colourful port town of La Rochelle, or pop south to discover why so many British people have fallen in love with the stunning landscapes of the Dordogne.
Poitiers, Angoulême, La Rochelle and Limoges all have airports offering direct flights from the UK, and Poitiers has a TGV stop too allowing you to take this super fast and efficient service as an option to air travel. The town of Ruffec, just ten minutes away from the village, has a railway station with excellent links to Poitiers. Driving is a doddle too, with the main N10 running close to Villefagnan.
There are some lovely properties on the market in and near the village at surprisingly low prices, so it represents an ideal opportunity to purchase your very own piece of rural France without breaking the bank. Country properties for restoration are quite plentiful in the area, which can be hard to find in some areas of France these days.

Access: By air: Fly to Poitiers, Angoulême, La Rochelle or Limoges. By rail: The TGV runs to Poitiers and the station at nearby Ruffec has excellent rail links. By road: The town is located just ten minutes from the N10 Paris -Bordeaux road.
