L'Absie is a small market town of the Deux-Sèvres department in Poitou-Charentes, which grew up around its mediaeval abbey. It has an idyllic location in the gentle Deux-Sèvres countryside, yet is within easy reach of the Vendée coastal resorts and the vibrant port town of La Rochelle.
L'Absie's heritage is centred on its mediaeval abbey, once a favourite of Eleanor of Aquitaine. The remains of the abbey can still be seen. The Notre Dame Church comes from the 12th to 15th centuries and today houses a fresco taken from the abbey. Many of the buildings in the town are traditionally built, with typically Charantaise features. The main square is attractively landscaped and makes a lovely centrepiece. The town hosts a farmer's market where you can buy fresh local produce, but should you miss this, there is no need to worry as the town has a good selection of shops which provide most things you will need. There are also plenty of bars and restaurants to enjoy.
L'Absie is a perfect base for walkers and cyclists, with quiet country lanes, sunflower fields and the lovely Forest of Absie on the doorstep. Many other activities are available nearby too, with golf, horse-riding, fishing, swimming and sailing all possible from a base in L'Absie.
The town lies near the Deux-Sèvres/Vendée border, and so offers a host of possibilities when it comes to getting out and about to enjoy the area. The area between L'Absie and Niort is where you will find the wonderful Green Venice, or to give it its proper name, the Marais Poitevin. This is a network of canals and waterways which produces a unique environment and begs to be explored, preferably by boat.
Niort itself is a lovely town and well worth a visit. It offers good shopping in addition to its pretty riverside setting. Across the border into the Vendée you can find the famously beautiful town of Fontenay le Compte, packed with history and fascination. Continuing to the west, you come to the beaches and lively holiday resorts of the Vendée department, one of France's favourite seaside destinations. La Rochelle is unmissable, and one of the most colourful and vibrant port towns to be found.
You can travel by plane or train to La Rochelle, Poitiers or Nantes from the UK. La Rochelle is served by Ryanair, Flybe, Jet2 and easyJet; Poitiers is served by Ryanair; and Nantes by Ryanair, Flybe and CityJet. Drivers will find L'Absie from the D744, D136 or D179 roads. The A10, A87 and A83 are the nearest major roads.
The Deux-Sèvres is a great place to seek property, as prices are very reasonable and you will get a lot of house for your money. Currently, it is possible to find a pretty village house for less than 60,000 Euros… and within an hour's drive of the Atlantic coast.
