A pretty town with a touch of summer magic
Niort, a town situated in western France in the department of Deux Sèvres in Poitou-Charentes, is a pretty market town which has a magical feel on balmy summer nights, when the main buildings in the town centre are floodlit with a soft amber light. The attractive stone and half-timbered houses are a real feature of Niort. The town lies on the southern edge of the Marais Poitévin region, which is variously compared with Venice and Amsterdam as it has a system of connecting waterways navigable by punts.

Markets and street theatre
Thursday, or Jeudi, if you want to be authentically French, has a special meaning in the town of Niort. On the third Thursday of every month Niort hosts a market, and like all French markets this transforms the town for its duration. Everything… and everyone, comes to life during the market hours, and it really is an event not to be missed. Thursday is also the day when you can watch street theatre and other entertainment, and in the summer this is a unique and fascinating feature of the town.

A watery ambience
As with many riverside towns, Niort has a tranquil ambience which stems directly from its position on two rivers. An illuminated bridge glows softly at night, its reflections in the water making you wish you could paint! Niort is frequently named by visitors as a favourite French town, and it isn’t hard to understand why. Everything you could want is here, such as shops, good restaurants, bars, cafés, banks, schools, supermarkets and other amenities.

A town of arts and crafts
Niort is known as a town of arts and crafts, and there is no shortage of examples of its talents. There are museums, libraries and various exhibitions to enjoy, yet there is a gentle air to the place, reminiscent of another, calmer age.
|
Sports stadium
Niort’s new sports stadium makes sure that sport is accessible to all. There are facilities for athletics and equitation, with golf, cycling, walking, fishing and boating all available locally too.
|
Out and about
The Fôret de Mervant is near the town, and the woodland trails are superb for both walkers and nature lovers. There is also a small zoo, and a children’s theme park. Fontenay le Comte is also close by, and this is well worth visiting as it has a beautiful chateau.
|
How to get there
If you wish to fly to Niort, the closest airport is Poitiers, which has direct flights from the UK with budget airline Ryanair. You can also take a TGV to Poitiers. To travel by road, you will need to take the A10 autoroute.
