Sauzé Vaussais – an old market town
Sauzé Vaussais (or Sauze Vaussais), which lies in the Deux Sèvres department of western France, in the Poitou-Charentes region, is an old market town that hosts not one but two weekly markets. Perhaps strictly more of a village than a town, having a population of less than two thousand, Sauzé Vaussais still manages to offer almost everything you will need for a comfortable life, with shops, bars, restaurants and leisure facilities. The village itself is attractive and traditional, with stone-built houses and typical Charantaise architecture.

Plenty to do in Sauzé Vaussais
Sauzé Vaussais may not be large, but it has plenty for its residents and visitors to enjoy. There is a lovely old Romanesque church to see, and some very good eateries and bars where you can socialise and pass the time. The markets, held on Thursdays and Saturdays, are reputed to be among the best in the region, so if you are a fan of the French market experience (and who isn't?) then don't miss them!

And for the active...
Those of you who like to keep active will also find that there are lots of sports and leisure opportunities in and around Sauzé Vaussais. The village has a lake with all kinds of activities available during the summer months, and you will also find tennis, horse-riding, petanque, cycle hire and other activities all in or very close to the village. Sauzé Vaussais also has mini golf, and there is a real full sized golf course within a thirty minute drive, so there's no need to suffer withdrawal symptoms from your favourite sports!

Out and about
The town lies in a lovely rural part of France, and the gentle rolling countryside is a delight at all times of year, although never more so than in early summer, when the fields are full of giant golden sunflowers. Cycling is a terrific way to discover the region around Sauzé Vaussais, as you can take in the scents and sounds of the countryside as well as the sights. There are some fascinating places to visit all within easy reach of the village too, with Poitiers and Angoulême being the major towns. Futuroscope and The Valley of the Monkeys are also within easy reach, and are excellent entertainment for all the family.

How to get there
Sauzé Vaussais is easily reached from the UK with two airports, Poitiers and La Rochelle both close by and served by budget airline Ryanair. Poitiers has a TGV station, so you can travel that far on the super fast train from Paris, changing to a local train to Ruffec, just over six miles (10 kilometres) from Sauzé Vaussais. The village itself lies just off the N10 auto route.

Property prices and availability in and around Sauzé Vaussais
In general, property in the Deux-Sèvres represents very good value for money, as although it is becoming very popular with ex-pats, the area is not yet overbought and it is still possible to pick up a real bargain. This is a great place to look if you want a realistically priced traditional stone village home, or a renovation project in the countryside close to the village.
