Attractive and bustling market town
The market town of St-Maixent-L’École, in the Deux-Sèvres department of Poitou-Charentes in western France, is a lovely old town. It is situated in the rural heart of the Deux-Sèvres, surrounded by beautiful countryside but also not far from the Atlantic coast.

Thriving Farmers’ Market
In St-Maixent farming is a way of life for the local population, so not surprisingly, the town has an excellent thriving Farmer’s Market. This is popular with both locals who want to buy the best of fresh local produce, and with tourists who enjoy it for its colour and vibrancy.

Ancient origins
The town has its origins way back in the fifth century, but most of the existing architecture in St-Maixent today is fifteenth to early nineteenth century. A high point of the town… literally… is the beautiful Abbey, which looks down on the town and draws the eye towards St-Maixent from quite a distance. St-Maixent has a military academy, and there is also a military museum to visit.

Dining in St-Maixent
Small and rural it may be, but there is no doubting that St-Maixent has a superb choice of restaurants to offer its residents and visitors. Local specialties to try include goats’ cheeses, which are said to be some of the tastiest in France.

Shopping in St-Maixent
Shopping in St-Maixent is also good, with most basic amenities such as supermarkets, small shops and banking available. The lovely town of Niort is close by, and should you need even more large town facilities you will find Poitiers just around 50 kilometres distance.

Day trips and places to visit
There is plenty to see and do in the immediate area, with Futuroscope at Poitiers and the lovely Atlantic coast resort of La Rochelle also within easy reach. The countryside of the Deux-Sèvres is peaceful and beautiful with lakes for water sports and fishing, lanes and tracks for horse-riding and cycling, excellent hiking, and golf too, for those who can’t imagine a good time without a golf course nearby!

How to get there
Getting to St-Maixent is straightforward. There is a TGV stop in the town itself, making rail travel a fast and easy option. It is also possible to fly direct to Poitiers from London Stansted with budget airline Ryanair.

Property prices and availability in and around St-Maixent
Property in and around the town of St-Maixent can really represent an excellent bargain. The Deux-Sèvres is not as over bought as some nearby departments, and thus offers the chance to purchase good rural property at better prices.
