A relaxed setting
Montmorillon is a quiet but busy town located in Poitou-Charentes, south of the Loire Valley. It has a pretty old quarter, with churches and chapels to explore. And with a population of just over 7,500, it also provides all the facilities you could wish for. There are two supermarkets, doctors, pharmacies, schools, restaurants, bars and even English tea-rooms.
|
Market days
Montmorillon has a market on a Wednesday, which is excellent in the summer months, and a smaller market on a Saturday. Close by is the town Les Herolles, which has market once a month on the 29th of each month (unless this is a Sunday in which case the market is moved to the following Monday). Les Herolles's market is said to be the biggest market in this part of France, selling everything from sheep, horses and chickens to wine and cheese.

Looking to the future
Montmorillon is close to Futuroscope, Poitou-Charentes’ ambitious theme park that offers visitors a glimpse of what a high tech future could look like. When night falls the park becomes the setting for a spectacular laser and fireworks display.

Avid readers
A book fair is held every year during June. Publishing makes up for a sizeable part of the city’s economy.

What's there to do?
The Gartempe River which runs through Montmorillon is host to a range of activities that interest people of all ages. The river is well stocked and fishing is a popular hobby for many of the town’s residents. The more adventurous might want to try their hand at kayaking. Horse-riding is also available and is a delightful way in which to explore the surrounding area. The town also has facilities for tennis, football, swimming, gymnastics and golf. And for those interested, there is an excellent campsite here too!

How do I get there?
Ryanair flies direct to both Limoges and Poitiers airports. France’s super fast TGV train service stops off in Poitiers. To get there by car, take the A10 from Paris.
|
What are property prices like?
Property prices in Poitou-Charentes have been pushed up by second home owners, coming from both Paris and abroad. Montmorillon is a popular place with British buyers and holiday makers. This means there is a good market for renting out your property during the summer months.
