A town with five castles!
Chauvigny, a mediaeval market town which is found in the Vienne department of western France, has no less than five ruined castles ranging along the ridge of a hill and overlooking the town. The view of the skyline from the banks of the River Vienne is spectacular!
|
Chauvigny's churches and surrounding beautiful countryside
Chauvigny is also known for its beautiful churches, and it is certainly worth taking a look at the Church of St Pierre. Meanwhile the surrounding countryside is delightfully unspoiled and peaceful, with rolling meadows and fields of corn, cows and sunflowers.
|
On the banks of the river
Chauvigny is situated on the banks of the River Vienne, which gives the department its name. The town rises up from this level, with the modern town with all amenities, shops and necessities being found here. There are three weekly markets, held on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
|
Chauvigny’s old quarter
The town also has a lovely old quarter, known as the Upper Town, where the narrow winding streets give way to attractive old squares. Here you can enjoy a delicious and atmospheric meal at one of the excellent restaurants and cafés which abound... though be warned, it can get a little busy in the main summer season.
|
Giants of the Sky
The town is home to a rare and fantastic aviary of giant birds and birds of prey. More than just an aviary too, as Chauvigny stages a spectacular event which has these fabulous birds swooping through the skies above the town and its chateaux to musical accompaniment. If you haven't seen anything like this before (and who has?), it is an experience which can really make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up!

Around and about
Chauvigny is ideally situated for those who want to explore the great city of Poitiers, capital of the region. The city itself has enough to interest you for plenty more than a day trip. Nearby, too, is the renowned theme park/homage to technology, Futuroscope, which is guaranteed to keep not only the kids happy for several hours! Sports fans can find lots of opportunities to get physical around the area too, with golf, horse-riding, sailing, swimming, cycling and tennis all available locally. Don't forget that La Rochelle and the Atlantic coast are all close to hand, so days at the seaside are yet another option from this useful base.

How to get there
To get to Chauvigny from the UK by air you have a choice. You can fly to Poitiers (which is very close to Chauvigny) with Ryanair from Stansted, or you can travel a little further from La Rochelle but have the choice of flying with Ryanair, flybe or easyJet... and have a greater choice of departure airports too. Those who like to travel by rail can do so, as there is a TGV stop at Poitiers from where you can link to a local train or pick up a hire car and drive.

Property prices and availability in and around Chauvigny
Cheaper than Poitiers but still only a short distance away, Chauvigny could be a really good choice for the canny home seeker. The Poitou-Charentes region is popular with British and other home seekers, but it is still a beautiful unspoiled region with plenty of good investment opportunities. There are some lovely properties around, with the traditional Charentaise country properties highly sought after.
