For buying and selling property in L'Isle Jourdain
The beautiful market town of L'Isle Jourdain lies in the Vienne department and on the banks of the river of the same name. The town partly got its name from a rocky island that existed in the middle of the River Vienne, which is now is towered over by a bridge. The town is historic and renowned as one of the prettiest in the region, but its most remarkable feature is without doubt the massive viaduct from which superb views of the town can be seen.
Spanning 304 metres and with 20 arches, the imposing viaduct is the most arresting sight of L'Isle Jourdain, but the town is historic and has retained vestiges of its past which add to its overall appeal. These include the Saint Sylvain Bridge, 11th and 12th century churches, a chateau and some Roman remains, as well as authentic and pretty houses and streets.
L'Isle Jourdain positively buzzes with things to do around the town. There's a traditional street market every Saturday morning in the Place d'Armes and a good selection of shops, bars and restaurants, including supermarkets and a boulangerie. Then are schools, doctors, dentists, a pharmacy and a post office.
For those who lead an active life, they will not be disappointed. The town has a swimming pool with a water slide (guaranteed to keep the kids happy!), cycling and hiking clubs, tennis courts and petanque pitches. There are various activities centred on the River Vienne and a nearby lake too, including water skiing and bungee jumping (from the viaduct no less)!
Visit Poitiers, 50 kilometres north-west of the town, with many historic sights and attractions and also a wonderfully educational and fun theme park, Futuroscope. For a day out with a difference take the family to the Vallée des Singes, where monkeys of all varieties can be seen enjoying life in natural surroundings, or discover the watery world of the Marais Poitevin, the so called Green Venice of Poitou-Charentes. It's also well within the bounds of possibility to travel a little farther afield and visit the Dordogne, the Atlantic coast or the green Lakeland of the Limousin.
Poitiers, Angoulême, Limoges and La Rochelle airports offer direct flights from the UK, with Poitiers being the closest airport. Poitiers, Angoulême and La Rochelle also have TGV stops so train travel is a viable option too. The nearest large roads are the N147 and N10, with the town itself lying on the D10/D11.
The really good news is that property prices in the Vienne are still low, and there is an incredible selection of bargain priced property on the market around the town of L'Isle Jourdain. The area is popular with tourists too, so rental possibilities are good.
