Souvigny - a picturesque, rural town with an interesting past

Souvigny is a small town which has a rich and interesting past. Links to the great Cluny Abbey, along with its own heritage, put Souvigny firmly on the map of places worth a visit, even if it is less known than it deserves to be. The town is set amid a very picturesque countryside, essentially rural yet offering good amenities.

Heritage of Souvigny

The town is architecturally superb. Once one of the most important towns in the region, it seemed to slip from its influential position. But it has now been reinstated with a nomination as a "great regional site of Auvergne" in 1993, and was made a "great Romanesque sanctuary of Auvergne" in 2003. Sauvigny's revival means that tourists are attracted to the town to see its Benedictine priory. The burial site of the Dukes of Bourbon, the priory is set in beautiful wooded grounds. There are other notable buildings too, such as the Church of Saint Martin (a classified historical monument) and the Maison de Voutes. The town also bears witness to its mediaeval heritage with some lovely half-timbered houses.

Shops and amenities in Souvigny

Souvigny is pretty well equipped for a small town. It's got shops and restaurants, and also has festivals and fairs throughout the year. If you are moving full-time to live in Souvigny and have small children, it's also good to know that the town has a choice of primary schools.

It's set on a bend in the River Aumance, and is truly charming. Generally though, the towns and countryside of the area are full of great things to discover.
