La Bourboule is a delightfully pretty ski and spa resort which is set in the Puy-de-Dôme department on the Massif Central. It benefits from a fabulous natural setting, in a dramatic and beautiful volcanic countryside of lakes, mountains and miles upon miles of unspoiled views. La Bourboule is the perfect answer for those seeking an outdoor or winter sports holiday with a difference, as it offers great skiing and snowboarding, walking and other mountain sports in a peaceful and unhurried environment.
La Bourboule has a slightly faded air, giving a feeling of a more elegant past when its spa facilities attracted an elite set to enjoy its healthy pampering. There are some lovely old houses in the town, whose centrepiece is a graceful church in a spacious square. Around the square you can find the usual complement of appealing cafés and restaurants, perfect for relaxing and watching La Bourboule life pass by.
The old thermal baths are worth a look, bringing the history of the town to life. Spa treatments are still available in the town, and La Bourboule has a particular reputation for treating children's allergy problems. Shopping is good in La Bourboule, with everything you might need on offer, including a proliferation of sports shops with equipment for skiing, snowboarding, walking and climbing. There's also an interesting covered market.
As La Bourboule is a ski resort, winter sports are popular and facilities for them very good. The resort provides a real alternative to the crowded and expensive resorts of the Alps, with great skiing, snowboarding and a range of winter and mountain sports in spectacular scenery. La Bourboule plans to open a top class swimming pool complex in the summer of 2010, providing yet more appeal for residents and tourists. The Parc Fenestre is another great attraction, a twenty hectare park packed with activities and entertainment for children and families.
Aside from the sporting possibilities afforded by the mountains, La Bourboule makes a good base for further exploration of the little known Puy-de-Dôme department. Places to visit include the spa town of Mont Dore, which has a good ice rink as well as a variety of further sports on offer; the lovely market town of Issoire; and even a volcano to climb... although don't worry, its last eruption was so long ago that you can climb it in safety these days.
Airports to use include Saint Etienne, Lyon, Rodez and Limoges. Lyon is served by Air France, British Airways, easyJet and bmi; Saint Etienne and Rodez by Ryanair; and Limoges by Ryanair and flybe. There is a new airport due to open just south of Brive la Gaillarde in neighbouring Limousin too, which may be of use. Train travel can get you to Lyon or Limoges in style on the excellent TGV service from Paris, while if driving you will find the town close to the A89 auto route. It can be accessed from the D130, the D996 and the D88.
The Puy-de-Dôme is not a well known area, so if you are seeking ski property and don't want to fork out high prices for the Alpine resorts you could do far worse than to take a look at what's available in or near La Bourboule. With small apartments starting at prices under 50,000 Euros, almost anybody can take advantage of owning property in a beautiful part of France, and with access to great skiing too.
