For buying and selling property in Saint Gervais d'Auvergne
Saint Gervais d'Auvergne, which is located in the volcanic Puy-de-Dôme department of the Auvergne region of southern central France, is a rural market town set in bucolic countryside and offering good access to many of the attractions of this region. Saint Gervais is very much an agricultural town, with a weekly market selling local produce and an economy centred on the raising of the beautiful Charollais beef cattle.
The architectural and historical heritage of Saint Gervais includes a Romanesque church, complete with original bell tower and interesting statues, some authentic houses and various notable French resistance sites including a fascinating Resistance Museum. Sadly, the chateau was destroyed by fire. In addition to the Monday morning food market, there are several shops and services in the town. An organic produce fair is held every September. Bars and restaurants complete the picture, offering the chance to really enjoy life in this pretty town.
Meanwhile, for those who love being outside in the fresh air, the lovely lake (Lac Philippe) on the edge of town offers swimming, fishing and windsurfing, and is a popular spot for camping weekends.
The surrounding area has many sites of interest. The region is well known for its volcanic origins, and a visit to the Vulcania volcano park and to the Puy-de-Dôme Volcano is highly recommended. The nearby Sioule Gorges are stunning, and offer opportunities for adventure sports as well as providing spectacular views.
The main city of Clermont Ferrand is worth a visit, as in spite of its industrial past and to an extent, present, it is a lovely city, offering a great architectural and cultural heritage, and a vibrant modern and social life. Thiers is worth a visit, with its heritage of cutlery making, while another to add to the itinerary of places to visit is Issoire, which has a famous Abbey.
The airport of Clermont Ferrand is useful for connections from Paris, but at this time it is not offering direct flights from the UK, so you will probably have to fly from Britain to Limoges or Lyon if you wish to travel by air. Limoges is served by Ryanair and Flybe and Lyon by easyJet, British Airways, Bmi Baby and Air France. There is a TGV stop in Clermont Ferrand, making rail travel a good option. The town is found along the D227/D987. The nearest major roads are the A71 and the A89.
Property in Saint Gervais offers great value for money, as the Auvergne in general has not yet achieved the high levels of popularity seen by other regions of France with overseas buyers. If you are looking for a cheap option for holidays, but want to make a little investment at the same time, consider the mobile home offered (at the time of writing, 2011) with its own swimming pool for the price of just 51,000 Euros. Making this a more permanent proposition by developing the site to include a bricks and mortar house may even be possible, but it would be necessary to check first to see if planning consent would be available. Otherwise a property ripe for complete renovation is also available at just 36,000 Euros.
