The region of Burgundy lies in the east of central France, bordering the regions of Ile-de-France, Champagne-Ardenne, Centre Val de Loire, Auvergne, Rhône-Alpes and Franche-Comte. It is a region of legendary vineyards and wines, waterways, green pastures and picturesque villages with a delicious gastronomy and a wealth of heritage and culture, and has consequently been a popular bolthole for ex-pats and discerning French alike for many years.
Burgundy is quite an affluent region, with an economy long linked to the wine industry and agriculture. Burgundy has a pleasant climate. The summers are not as hot as in the south of the country, yet are generally sunny and warm. Winters can be cold, but generally mild.
Burgundy has four departments: the Côte d'Or, epicentre of the wine region of Burgundy and home to the great cities of Beaune and Dijon; Nièvre, lesser known but offering stunning, unspoilt countryside; Saône et Loire, where you can discover castles and canals; and the Yonne, with more vineyards and wonderful heritage towns and religious buildings.
In the middle of all these departments is an area of agricultural land, forests and small hamlets known as the Morvan. Once thought of as a poor part of Burgundy, it has gradually become more popular over the years, with initially Parisiens and then the Dutch seeking weekend homes here. Now other ex-pats are joining in, looking for permanent homes as well a second homes, in peaceful countryside not too far from major towns. The fact that property prices have remained attractive might also have something to do with it, though the area does also have the Morvan Nature Park, as well as a rich cultural heritage to offer.
There are many reasons to live in, or to visit, Burgundy. The first that comes to many people's minds is, of course, the wines, many of which are among the finest in the world. The vineyards and wine estates cover much of the countryside, especially in the Côte d'Or, and anyone with at least a passing interest in wine will enjoy taking tours, courses, tastings and visiting the wine caves of this wine oriented region.
Dijon (the capital city of Burgundy) along with other great towns such as Beaune, Cluny and Vézelay offer up a wealth of history and heritage. The architecture ranges from mediaeval to Gothic, and the many excellent museums provide a fascinating insight into the past that has shaped Burgundy and its people.
Cruising the canals and waterways of Burgundy is a much loved pastime, and a wonderful way to enjoy the changing countryside as you slip gently by in your boat. The waterways are also fun for kids, with possibilities for canoeing and swimming, or they are simply a beautiful feature of the Burgundian landscape.
Burgundy is as acclaimed for its gastronomy as it is for its wines. Classic dishes such as Boeuf Bourguignon, snails in garlic butter, French onion soup laced with brandy or the all time British favourite, Coq au Vin are all from the region, and give you a taste of all the delicious dishes to follow as you spend more and more time in the region, discovering the fabulous flavours of Burgundy.
There are currently no airports in Burgundy offering direct flights to/from the UK. Dijon airport may have in the future however, so it would be best to check the airport's schedules when you want to fly. Depending on where in Burgundy you want to get to, the closest airports with direct flights are Paris, Lyon and Geneva. You can also travel on the excellent TGV service which brings you to the heart of Burgundy in effortless fashion. Burgundy has a very good, efficient road network too, with both fast toll roads and also free main roads which take a little longer but offer a better chance to enjoy the passing scenery and towns.
Burgundy has a wide variety of property from very cheap rural barns upwards. Its sophisticated, elegant towns and cities come at a price, as do substantial country properties in the winelands. However, Burgundy does have affordable properties coming onto the market so it isn't really out of reach for most people. The market in Burgundy remains buoyant, and properties tend to hold their value well.

The Côte-d'Or is the premier department for fine wines from the Burgundy region such as Beaune, Nuits Saint Georges and Pouilly Fuisse. The area boasts many attractions to the foreign visitor but is still relatively undiscovered. It is still possible to find attractive properties for renovation at a good price.
Nièvre is a glorious area of pasture, woodland and gracious lakes dotted with historic buildings. The wines of "Pouilly sur Loire" are globally recognised, the most famous being 'Pouilly Fumé'. The "Circuit des Vignobles" offers the chance to sample these delicious wines which are not included in the Burgundy appellation. Nearly 1,000 hectares of the department are planted mainly with the Sauvignon grape known as "blanc fumé" because of the smokey grey tinge of the grapes.
