The vibrant city of Dijon, in eastern France, is not just the capital city of Burgundy, it is a cultural capital in its own right. Dijon combines authentic Renaissance architecture and ambience with a youthful energy and modern outlook. This beautiful city, set amidst the lush countryside and massive vineyards for which Burgundy is renowned, is packed with cultural experiences of every sort. Theatres and museums, art galleries and manor houses rub shoulders with parks, lakes and hotels. Supermarkets offer their shiny new wares alongside dusty little broccante shops. Don't go to Dijon if you haven't much time… you will only want to stay.
It is impossible to speak of Dijon without giving due mention to the famous mustard produced in the town, although this is only one of the many epicurean delights you will encounter here. Dijon is a centre of excellence for fine dining, and there are a massive variety of restaurants in the town, a good number being Michelin-starred establishments, where only the best is good enough. There is also a wide variety of ethnic and casual eateries, such as Chinese restaurants, Pizzerias, Indian restaurants and many more. In addition to the fine wines produced in the area, you might like to try Kir, a delicious drink made with white wine and cassis, a blackcurrant liqueur made in Dijon.
Residents of Dijon are truly spoiled for choice when it comes to finding things to do with their leisure time. You can thrill to the strains of grand opera in the city's Opera House, enjoy a night at the theatre, take in a film or throw yourself into the essentially French experience of joining in one of the many Fêtes to which the city plays host. Try, for example, the International flower show, Florissimo, which attracts people from all over Europe, and is a riot of scents and colour. If you're young and energetic, get yourself along to the bars and restaurants where the students hang out and catch up with the latest on the music scene. Dijon is a city of contrasts, where everyone will find something to delight in.
Fascinating as the city is, it would be a shame to miss out on the glorious countryside which surrounds Dijon. If you leave the city and head south, you will find yourself in the heart of the great Burgundy wine region. Here you can visit the famous vineyards, taste the wines and buy a bottle (or ten!) to take home and enjoy at your leisure.
Fans of motor sports will be interested in the racing circuit of Dijon-Prenois, which played host to the French formula one Grand Prix no less than five times in the past. There are many sporting opportunities in and around the city, with easy access to tennis, swimming, golf, fishing, boating, horse-riding and cycling.
The best way to reach Dijon is by the super-fast train, the TGV. You can take the Eurostar from London to Paris, then change to a TGV which will take you straight to Dijon in around one hour and 40 minutes. It is possible to fly into Dijon as there is an airport, but you can't get a direct flight from the UK. It is necessary to first fly to Paris, and then change planes for Dijon.
Property in Dijon is usually fairly expensive, as the city and its environs are popular with both French and foreign property buyers. This does mean, however, that property purchased here is a good investment, as prices remain high and the market remains buoyant.
