The town of Pouilly sur Loire sits on the banks of the River Loire in the department of Nièvre in Burgundy. It is world famous for its superb white wines. The town of Sancerre, Pouilly sur Loire's rival in the wine industry, lies opposite on the other bank of the River Loire.
Pouilly sur Loire has another point of interest besides its wines, and that lies in its abundance of wildlife. Quiet riverside settings are a perfect place to see all manner of unusual flora and fauna, and this little town offers plenty of both. Over 190 species of bird have been reported as being seen and identified here, as have many rare species of fish in the clean waters of the river at this point on its journey. The respect given to the wildlife here is also unusual in France, where in the winter months hunters roam the fields shooting at (seemingly) anything that moves. Around Pouilly sur Loire the hunters are only allowed to use bows and arrows to hunt instead of guns... although it is doubtful that this makes them any less deadly to the creature on the receiving end!
Pouilly sur Loire is a peaceful and pretty town, and with the River Loire running beside it, it makes a lovely retreat from modern life with all its noise and clangour. There's not a lot to do in the town, but therein resides some of its charm. It is really all about wine, and you can certainly find plenty to do, see and learn on this topic, with vineyards all around, many offering tastings and tours.
Pouilly sur Loire does have a museum, Musée Ernest Guedon, where you can trace the region's history. Most of the usual shops and services can be found in town, with one or two very good restaurants nearby. Greater amenities can be accessed across the river in Sancerre.

To get to Pouilly sur Loire by air you can fly to either Lyon, Paris Orly or Paris Charles de Gaulle. Then you will need to hire a car or go by train for the rest of the journey. Lyon is served by Air France, British Airways, easyJet and bmi; Paris Orly by Air France; and Paris Charles de Gaulle by Air France, British Airways, bmi, bmibaby, flybe, easyJet, Jet2, Thomsonfly and Aer Lingus. There is a railway station in the town, with links to Paris. If driving, you will find the town on the A77 auto route.
This part of Burgundy, although famed for its wines, has been slow to be discovered by mass tourism and holiday property seekers. It has however been popular with Parisians, who know a good thing when they find it! Thus prices are not as high as you might expect, with some bargains to be found.
