The town of Argentat, which is located in south-west central France, in the Limousin region, is one of France's best kept secrets. The town is delightfully pretty, with its clean white-washed houses and distinctively shaped grey slate roofs, and it lies amidst some of the most unspoiled and beautiful landscapes of France.
Argentat is a market town, like so many in France, and through this retains a character reminiscent of days gone by. The market takes place on every first and third Thursday of the month, and it is an event which you will not want to miss. More than just a place to buy and sell, the market in a traditionally rural community such as this one is a way of life, a meeting point and an oasis of companionship for those who live and work on the isolated farms up in the hills above the town.
The Dordogne River, in all its glory, runs right through the middle of Argentat, adding to its appeal and providing the ideal location for a number of excellent and very picturesque restaurants along the quayside. Dining here, gazing out onto the river with its old and new bridges and softly flowing waters, has to be one of the most romantic experiences to be found in France! Shopping is mostly done in the centre of town, and there are a good amount of shops and other amenities to be found there.
Those who enjoy sporting activities will love the area. Close to Argentat you can access so many exciting sports you will be spoiled for choice... or exhausted! There is canoeing and kayaking on the river, and the region is said to be one of the best in the whole of the country for fishing. There are miles and miles of designated tracks for horse-riding, cycling and walking, and nature lovers will stand a really good chance of catching sight of deer and wild boar as wildlife thrives in this remarkable natural environment.
It is quite easy to get to Argentat from the UK, as there is an airport at nearby Limoges which offers cut price flights with Ryanair and flybe. For those who prefer rail travel, the good news is that there is a station in the town of Brive la Gaillarde, and anyone wishing to drive just has to get onto the N120 which bypasses the town.
If you are looking to purchase property in or near Argentat and you are on a bit of a tight budget, there is good news for you as this is one of the cheaper areas in the country to buy property. Corrèze is marginally pricier than Creuse, but still represents extremely good value for money. Still relatively undiscovered by the masses, there is a wealth of lovely property here just waiting to be found.
