The village of Collonges la Rouge is one of the most stunning villages in the whole country. It is, in fact, officially listed as a "plus beaux village de France", and well justifies this top billing. Built of deep red sandstone and displaying beautiful traditional architecture in addition to important monuments, Collonges la Rouge is a special place, and one that you won't want to miss. Its location, amid the lovely lakes and lush green pastures of the Limousin, is an added bonus!
The only downside to Collonges la Rouge is that it is a victim of its own popularity, so it is best visited in the low season, but if you are planning to live there, don't worry, everything else makes up for the hectic few weeks of high summer! The village itself is amazingly beautiful, with gorgeous buildings complete with fairytale towers and facades, while its deep red colour makes it impossibly picturesque, especially set against the ultra green countryside around. Sights not to miss include the 16th/17th century market place (a listed historical monument), a 12th century church and the Maison de la Siren with its museum. The village, in spite of only having some 460 permanent residents, also offers some delightful shops and restaurants.
Many sporting activities are available within easy reach of Collonges too, so whether you want to swim in a cool lake or public swimming pool, walk in the countryside, see the area from the back of a faithful steed or get on your bike, you can enjoy your chosen activity here.
Close to home, the area around Collonges la Rouge is packed with interesting places to go and things to do. The town of Beaulieu sur Dordogne is lovely, as is the mediaeval riverside town of Argentat, while the Gouffres de la Fage is a site of outstanding natural beauty, and only a few short kilometres from Collonges.
