The small market town of Bonnat is an old French town with a real difference. In addition to the old streets and houses of the community, typical of the region, the town owns its chateau to which has been added a successful motor racing circuit! Definitely one for the boys of the family (large or small!) to love.
Bonnat is, in many ways, a typical, traditional old market town in rural France, with everyday life in Bonnat being made easy by a good selection of shops and services. These include small shops, a supermarket, pharmacies, doctors and vets, schools and restaurants. The street market takes place every Saturday morning, overlooked by graceful old buildings, some of which have been around since the early Middle Ages. The Church of Saint Savien was built in the 13th century, while the chateau and the beautifully restored mediaeval lavoir (old public wash house) also bear testimony to a long history.
What is really different about Bonnat, however, is that in the grounds of the chateau, which is owned by the commune, there is an established motor racing circuit. Various events are held at the circuit including car and motorcycle races, and the circuit even incorporates a restaurant for social and corporate functions.
Close to Bonnat are all the usual attractions of the Limousin. There are lakes for swimming, sailing and fishing, trails for walking, cycling and horse-riding, as well as golf courses for those keen on the sport. Near to Bonnat, places worth a visit include several chateaux, the main town of Guéret with its museum, lake and shops, the carpet town of Aubusson and the historic town of La Souterraine.
The airport and train station of Limoges make it readily accessible from the UK, thanks to Ryanair, Flybe and the efficient TGV rail services that operate to and from this city. Drivers can also find the town lying on the D6/D15, with the nearest major roads being the N145 and the A20.
The Limousin has a well deserved reputation for cheap property, and the Creuse, as its least known department, tends to have more of this than most! There are currently (November 2011) no less than six properties offered for sale at well under 100,000 Euros, with the lowest priced being an unbelievably cheap 38,000 Euros.
