The town of Bourganeuf lies in the Creuse department of the Limousin, which is a region often overlooked and underrated. Those who know it, however, understand that it possesses a beauty almost unsurpassed in this country of wonderful landscapes. It is a perfect place for both restful holidays away from the stresses and strains of modern life and also to put down roots for a permanent home. The quality of living offered in the Limousin is excellent, with low property prices, superb locally produced foods, a pleasant and temperate climate and a slow and relaxed pace of life.
Bourganeuf itself is a little town with a secret past. Once known as the headquarters of the society of the Knights Templar, Bourganeuf takes its place in the legendary mysteries in which such societies are involved. There are even links to the Da Vinci Code story in which author Dan Brown spins a tale of intrigue surrounding the Holy Grail.
Modern day Bourganeuf, however, is a little more down to earth, although it will in no way disappoint! The town is a very attractive market town, typical of its region, with interesting buildings and charming little streets to explore. The town is well supplied with shops and restaurants, and there is plenty to see and do.
There is a five storey tower, built with massive oak beams, which is known as the tower of Zizim. This is said to have been built as a place of refuge for a Turkish prince, Prince Djem, to enable him to escape the murderous intentions of his brother, the Sultan. Whether or not this story is true, the tower is well worth a visit, as it has magnificent views from the top. It is open for visitors from the beginning of July until the end of August each year.
For those who like to keep active, the area around Bourganeuf is superb for a number of sports, such as golf, walking, cycling and horse-riding.
Getting to Bourganeuf from the UK is not difficult, thanks to airlines such as Ryanair and flybe who now offer flights to many airports in rural France. You can fly to Limoges with these airlines at very low cost from Stansted, Liverpool, Southampton or East Midlands airports. If you enjoy driving through France to reach your destination you will find the town is accessed not far from the A20 motorway.
Property in and around Bourganeuf can still represent a real bargain, especially when the prices are compared with those in many other parts of France. Be warned, though, this situation is unlikely to continue as more and more people are discovering the region! Country style properties, such as farms and barns for conversion and restoration abound here, and in the town itself you may be lucky enough to find an authentic old townhouse in need of some TLC.

Bourganeuf is found just east of the centre of France, in east of the Creuse department, not far from the Creuse's border with Haute-Vienne.

Access: By air: Fly into Limoges with Ryanair or flybe, from Stansted, Liverpool, Southampton or East Midlands.
Economy: Much of the economy of the region is agricultural, and this does play a part in the economy of Bourganeuf, but the town also produces high quality and very expensive carpets.
Interesting fact: The carpet which covers the floor of the Empire State Building in the USA actually came from Bourganeuf!
