Gouzon is a very attractive little town of the Creuse department in the Limousin. It maintains a rural, traditional air, yet is well equipped with shops and services. And, it's conveniently close to many of the region's best attractions too. All in all, it's an idyllic location for a holiday home, or for a permanent move to France.
Gouzon has plenty of history, like many of France's lovely old villages. Of its heritage sights, it's definitely worth seeing the churches of Saint Martin and Saint Nicolas des Forges. The natural heritage is equally impressive. There's a lovely fishing lake, a protected wildlife pond that's wonderful for bird watchers, and lots of beautiful walking country.
Gouzon is a "village d'étape", meaning that it's a recommended stop-over place for travellers. In order to gain this title, the town has to fulfil certain criteria. It must have less than 5,000 inhabitants and has to offer a range of shops and services along with a tourist office. Gouzon goes beyond the call of duty here and offers a good range of shops, a Carrefour supermarket and a selection of restaurants. The village also has regular markets on Tuesdays and specialist markets and fairs throughout the year.
Alongside the usual country activities found across the Limousin (horse-riding, walking, cycling), Gouzon has excellent fishing and wildlife lakes. It's also highly popular with golfers as there are two great courses there. One is a short, nine-holer, while the other offers the full eighteen for real enthusiasts.
Getting out and about and exploring the area is always part of the pleasure of being in France. From Gouzon, you might decide to take a trip to nearby Aubusson, famed home of the Aubusson carpets. Or, perhaps, you'd enjoy a visit to La Souterraine with its 13th century crypt? A little further afield is the main city of Limoges, famed for its porcelain, medieval enamels and oak barrels which are used in Cognac production.
Reaching the area is so easy if you're travelling from the UK. Limoges has an airport that's served by Ryanair and Flybe, making flying cheap and easy. There is also an airport at Clermont Ferrand, that currently offers seasonal direct flights to/from the UK. Then there's a TGV station at Limoges too, for rail fans. And finally, a good road network brings you to the town's doorstep on the N145 non toll motorway.
The Limousin is noted for its low property prices, so it's a great place to look if you're after a bargain investment. The region also offers a wonderful lifestyle incorporating outdoor summers, mild winters, a delicious gastronomy and a laid back attitude.
