For buying and selling property in Massat
Massat is a typical mountain village of the Ariège. Its picturesque setting, in the sparsely populated Courserans region of the Pyrénées, gives it a delightfully peaceful air. And, it makes it a perfect getaway spot for all who love the mountains and the bountiful wildlife that is found there. Small though it is today, the village was once much larger and was an important producer of butter and dairy products. The lush green pastures that surround it are still home to cattle in the summer months.
With its long history, Massat, although apparently unassuming, has plenty of heritage. This includes its little church which has a lovely octagonal bell from the 15th century, the Tower of Laffont and many old houses built in the local style. Natural heritage is even more abundant, with lakes, mountain peaks and pastures.
For a small village in one of the most rural and undiscovered parts of the region, Massat is actually rather well equipped. Don't expect to find hypermarkets, of course, but you will find village shops and services catering to most everyday needs. There's a grocer's, a mini market, post office, wine shop and a pharmacy, among others. You'll also be able to enjoy a couple of good bars and restaurants for when you want to dine out or simply socialise a little.
There's certainly no shortage of activities available to you around Massat! In fact, it could be one of the best bases in France if you love mountain walking, cycling, pony trekking or skiing and cross country skiing. There are some excellent ski resorts less than an hour away. The lakes of the region also offer chances to swim, boat or fish.
From Massat, there are a lot of interesting places to visit. You can pop along to the acclaimed Saturday market in St Girons, visit the "miracle" town of Lourdes, or spend a day in the fascinating observatory of the Pic du Midi. Day trips to the neighbouring principality of Andorra are also popular among people living or staying in the area, as you can find lots of tax free shopping there as well as enjoy the scenic journey through the mountains.
You can arrive by air or TGV in Toulouse, Perpignan, Pau or Carcassonne. If you're driving, you'll find Massat on the D18/D618. The nearest major roads are the A64 and N20.
Massat has some amazing bargains to show you! This part of the south of France is still pretty much undiscovered, and property prices here are among the lowest in the whole of the south. Village houses can easily be picked up for less than 50,000 Euros, although there may be a little work to do.
