For buying and selling property in Mazères
The pretty bastide town of Mazères is uniquely placed for easy access from the airports and railway stations of both Toulouse and Carcassonne. This makes it a great location for a second home, as it's so easy to access from the UK. Charmingly historic and typically Toulousain in style and architecture, the town retains a mediaeval air, yet has all home comforts and modern amenities. It also enjoys a lovely riverside setting.
Mazères is a bastide town, and still follows the typical pattern of these distinctive "mediaeval new towns". Many of the houses are built in the same distinctive pink brick as Toulouse, and also display the local style of pebble designs in their walls. Some have external timbers betraying their mediaeval origins. The most important buildings in Mazères are the church and the 16th century Hotel Ardouin (housing an excellent museum now). The natural heritage includes the ponds and wetlands known as the Field Of Birds and the River l'Hers.
Mazères has plenty of shops, and also a charming street market that takes place on Wednesdays. Then there's a cinema, bars and several good restaurants, so you can enjoy the local delicacies. Mazères also has doctors, schools and a pharmacy, so all the basics are covered.
Mazères's location means that you have a massive choice of activities open to you. Head into the Pyrénées and go skiing or climbing, or head for the gorges and try your hand at white water rafting or canyoning. Pop down to the Med for glorious beaches, oysters and seaside fun, or just stick around the locality and go horse-riding, cycling or wine tasting. Carcassonne has a lovely golf course, if golf is your addiction.
