For buying and selling property in Pailhès
Pailhès is a picturesque mediaeval village complete with an historic castle, once playing host for a night to no less a personage than Henri II, King of France! The village lies in gloriously unspoilt surroundings, close to the ski resorts and spas of the Pyrénées, and near to leisure lakes, rivers and pre-historic caves that are all part of the Ariège experience.
Pailhès has many original buildings and streets, and is a delight to explore on foot. The heritage includes the chateau, of course, but also a lovely church and a chapel from the 15th century, complete with some intriguing murals from that time. More modern day pleasures in Pailhès include concerts and cultural events held both in the chateau and around the village, which has a vibrant community spirit. Shopping and dining and activities such as bowling are available in nearby Pamiers, a lively town with all services and amenities.
The Ariège is a gorgeous department, and one which is a paradise for lovers of outdoor and adventure sports. From its ski stations and mountain sports centres to its thermal spas, its leisure lakes for swimming, sailing and fishing (the superb Lac Montbel is very close to Pailhès) and its beautiful, unspoilt countryside, the Ariège offers the chance to partake in almost any activity you can name. Try pony trekking in the mountains on the sturdy, locally bred Merens horses, hiking or cycling along the quiet tracks and lanes, or get adventurous and have a go at white water rafting or even rock climbing.
There is a wealth of architectural heritage to discover too, with gorgeous bastide towns like Mirepoix to visit and pretty villages such as Camon to see. There are castles to explore (Foix is fascinating, or climb to the tragic site of the last Cathar castle at Montsegur) and so much history to find you will never be bored. Also within reach for a day trip is the tiny tax haven principality of Andorra, so why not take the credit cards and enjoy some bargain shopping?
Fly to Toulouse or Carcassonne, both of which can also be reached by rail. (Toulouse is served by British Airways, Air France, easyJet, Flybe and Jet2, while Carcassonne is served by Ryanair.) Pamiers has a railway station which links to Toulouse. If you are driving, and please note, a car really is needed in the rural Ariège, Pailhès lies on the D919 or D119. The nearest major road is the A66.
The Ariège is one of the cheaper departments of the region of the Midi-Pyrénées, and still offers fantastic bargains. The area abounds in rural properties, farmsteads, renovation projects and sweet village homes, so there should be something around here to suit most people.
