If you love the authenticity and beauty of traditional mountain villages then take a look at the typically Pyrénéan village of Arreau, which is located in the south-west of France in the Haute-Pyrénées department of the Midi-Pyrénées region. Arreau is only small, having some 823 inhabitants, but the village is superbly located for accessing all the attractions of this beautiful part of France. It lies between the Aspin and Peyresourde mountain passes, close to three ski resorts (Peyragudes, Val Louron, and Saint Lary) and several spa towns.
Arreau is authentic and unspoiled, but it positively hums with activity in the tourist seasons, and is a great place to enjoy shopping and dining as well as access to some of the best ski resorts in the region. There's plenty to do here, with charming gift and craft shops, a host of cosy bars and restaurants and festivals and other cultural events to enjoy in the summer. The village is known for its unusual and fascinating displays of eagle flying... definitely worth seeing!
Even in winter, when the snow is thick carpet of white on the ground and a tantalising sparkle on the mountain peaks, you will find a warm and friendly welcome in Arreau. Due to its location on the main route through the Pyrénées, this little village is used to visitors, and has a long tradition of hospitality.
The mountain setting of Arreau means that the seasons really are everything they should be... lush greenery and colourful flowers in spring, blue skies and hot sun in summer, dramatic reds and golds in autumn and, of course, a snowy wonderland in winter. Each season brings a different delight too, with swimming and fishing in lakes and rivers, skiing, walking, and mountain biking being some of the most popular pursuits.
The countryside offers amazing views wherever you go, and simply walking, cycling or driving around the area is a great way to spend a day. Of course, there are spa towns nearby where you can indulge in pampering treatments, and some historical places too, with the caves of nearby Labastide with some prehistoric drawings and the amazing rock crystal formations at the Esparros Abyss. You can pop across into Spain... or access either the surfing beaches of the Atlantic in the west or the calm, warm waters of the Med to the east... the possibilities are endless.
There are several airports within reach of Arreau. The airport of Pau is very near, with direct flights from the UK with budget airline Ryanair. Or you could fly to Toulouse which is slightly further away but served by more airlines, including British Airways, flybe, bmi and easyJet. Rail travel is also possible, with the TGV taking you to either Toulouse or to Tarbes, from where you can access a local train service to the SNCF station in Arreau. If you are driving, you can find the town on the D929, along the former N618 or "Route of the Pyrénées", which can be accessed from the A64 auto route.
Despite its fantastic location, Arreau offers affordable property, which is a rarity these days if you want to be within easy reach of decent ski resorts.
