Madiran - a famous wine village

The name of Madiran is known world wide thanks to its delicious, deep red tannic wines, said to have the best health giving properties of all wines. Wine is certainly the raison d'être in this village and the surrounding communities, but the village itself is also attractive, full of character and set in the beautiful surroundings of the Pyrénéan Mountains.

One of the healthiest places in the world to live

The village is only tiny, having just 536 residents, but it is certainly one to consider if you are seeking a property in the stunning Pyrénéan Mountains region. As renowned for its quality of life as it is for its wines, Madiran has to be one of the healthiest places in the world to live. The wines have unique health giving qualities; the climate is as near to perfect as it gets with plentiful sunshine and clean, fresh mountain air; the countryside is unspoilt and as pretty as a picture; and the culture is vibrant and friendly.

Excellent facilities and festivals to enjoy

Madiran has excellent facilities for such a small village, with a little school, a village hall for social activities, a post office, small general shop, boulangeries, a hairdresser's, a garden shop and even a bar and a restaurant for those really feel good times. Madiran's wine festival is the premier event of the year, and takes place in August each year, but the village also hosts various music festivals for jazz, country and western and classical music.

Out and about

Madiran lies in that magic triangle between the Atlantic Ocean, the Pyrénéan Mountains and the Mediterranean Sea. Not to mention being in the midst of gorgeous, traditional villages and close to the historic town of Tarbes. The regional capital of Toulouse is also within easy reach, and offers a multitude of things to do and see in addition to fabulous shopping and dining.

Both the coast and the mountains are within reach

It is but a short drive to the Atlantic coast, where the surfer's paradise of Biarritz awaits, and you can easily hop over the border into Spain for a little shopping and a look around. Even the Med is accessible, just a bit further to the east. Finally, of course, there are the stunning mountains of the Pyrénées, with the snowy slopes of the ski resorts on the top and the lush, green pastures and pretty Basque villages below. There is something for all tastes in this truly unique land.

How to get there

The nearest airport is Pau, which is served by Flybe, Air France and CityJet, though you could also fly into the airports of Lourdes, Biarritz or Toulouse. You could take the ferry to Bilbao too and enjoy the crossing, though it does mean a bit of a drive after disembarking. TGV trains will get you to Tarbes. If driving, the town is found on the D48, close to the A65 (toll road) and the N124 (non toll) motorways.
