For buying and selling property in Saint Lary Soulan
St Lary Soulan, which lies in the mountains that separate Spain and France, is one of the Pyrénées' top ski resorts and spa towns. In its position as the biggest and best... or thereabouts... it manages to retain a traditional charm and succeed as a very popular holiday destination without compromising its character and appeal.
St Lary Soulan is a winter wonderland for skiers, and a summer paradise for walkers and mountain sports enthusiasts as well, making it just about perfect for everyone. The ski resort is exceptional and located in three areas, St Lary 1700, St Lary 1900 and St Lary 2400. Overall it offers over 50 pistes and has unusually good and extensive family facilities, with a Kid Park, a snow kindergarten and a great toboggan run.
In summer time too there is a lot going on, with adventure sports taking the pride of place. Go climbing, canyoning or rafting, whatever takes your fancy. The snow park at St Lary 2400 is transformed into a skate park in the summer so the fun never stops. The resort lies near the GR10, making it perfect for walkers and horse-riders, and if you happen to be around in July you have a very good chance of seeing the Tour de France pass through, as St Lary Soulan is frequently a very popular part of the course.
There is a top of the range thermal spa at St Lary, so if you feel in need of a little serious pampering then here is the place to do it. It's a wonderful way to ease those stiff muscles after a day on the ski slopes, or a hard day rock climbing. There is a lovely open air pool in town as well, great for cooling off on hot summer days.
All the above is good news for the sporty among you, but if your idea of heaven is shopping, dining or perhaps a little of that continental café scene the French enjoy, then St Lary will not disappoint. The town is heaving with colourful shops, cafés and restaurants, and there is a cinema and kids' play activities too. Unlike many ski resorts, there is a lively atmosphere all year round, so you can enjoy all the seasons in St Lary.
Just taking in the glorious mountain scenery is enough for some, and it is true that almost anywhere you go within a few kilometres of the town there are stunning views. Nearby you can visit the caves of Labastide, which has some prehistoric drawings, or see the amazing rock crystal formations at the Esparros Abyss. You can take the Aragnouet-Bielsa tunnel to Spain... or access either the Atlantic in the west or the Med to the east... the possibilities are endless.
There are several airports within reach of St Lary. The best choice is probably Pau, with direct flights from the UK with budget airline Ryanair, though Biarritz and Toulouse are also within reach. Biarritz is served by Ryanair, and Toulouse by British Airways, flybe, bmi, easyJet and Jet2. Rail travel is also possible with the TGV taking you to either Toulouse or to Tarbes, from where you can access local bus services to your destination. You can continue by local train, but the nearest station to St Lary is at Lannemezan, 41 kilometres away. If you are driving, you can find the town from the A64 auto route, lying on the RD929. If travelling from Paris, take the A10 to Bordeaux, the RN21 to Lannemazan, and finally the RD929.
St Lary Soulan is a popular resort which keeps prices healthy, but remember, even if property here is not the cheapest, it is generally less expensive to buy in the Haute-Pyrénées than on the Atlantic or Mediterranean coasts. And also property in this part of France is considerably better value for money than on the other side of the border in northern Spain. The area is getting better known as time goes on, though, so price rises in the future are a possibility.
