Bayeux is, quite rightly, famous for its tapestry that commemorates the 1066 Norman Conquest. You can visit the tapestry in the central museum in the town, and it's definitely worth seeing. But there's more to the town than this alone. Bayeux has a glorious cathedral, an agricultural market, and many lovely old buildings. It's also a great base for enjoying much of north-west France. It's close to the beaches, and plenty of other attractions.
Bayeux has all the shops and amenities you'll need. There are shops for everyday needs, and also plenty of tourist shops selling gifts and crafts. The Farmers' Markets are great to browse too, with fresh, local produce on sale. The town has also got a good selection of hotels, bars, cafés and restaurants, so you'll never be stuck for opportunities for socialising and dining out. Leisure facilities include a swimming pool, sports centres and a skate park. Bayeux has several schools for children of all ages, plus doctors, dentists, pharmacies and a hospital.
You can't mention the name "Bayeux" without thinking of the famous tapestry. You can see this in the museum (Musée de la Tapisserie) in the centre of the town, and it's well worth going to see. After that, sights include the cathedral, mediaeval buildings, a war museum, art gallery and more.
If you're looking for things to do and places to go from a base in Bayeux, you'll be spoiled for choice. Just outside the town you can find access to golf, horse-riding, rambling, sailing and many more activities. The glorious beaches are within a short drive, perfect for summer days out and also for history buffs who want to see the D-Day sites. There are war museums to visit too for those who want to trace the events that took place here throughout history. Places worth a visit are the unforgettable Mont St Michel (France's favourite tourist attraction) and the Forest de Cerisy, where there are some wonderful woodland walks.
