Gavray - a lively and accessible town

The vibrant market town of Gavray lies in the Manche department of Lower Normandy. Close to the famous Normandy beaches, lively resorts and sights like Mont St Michel, Gavray occupies an enviable location. And, it makes an ideal weekend getaway for UK residents as travel is easy and quick whether you choose to arrive by plane, boat, train or car.

Heritage in Gavray

Gavray has a few sites of historical interest. The first and most prominent is its ducal Norman castle, ruined but still noteworthy. Next up on the monument menu is the hundred-year old Church Saint Pierre, which has some interesting period features. Last but not least, Gavray boasts a manor and a chapel. Pretty impressive for a small town!

All the essentials of daily life are found in Gavray

While some small French towns and villages have very little in the way of public amenities, others are surprisingly well equipped for their size. Fortunately, Gavray falls into the second bracket. It has shops and even restaurants, as well as a good range of useful services. Then there are several markets held in the town. Saturday sees a general market which is on all morning, but there are also regular other markets selling livestock and various interesting items! In addition, Gavray hosts fairs and festivals that are great fun to be part of. One of the best is the Norman Festival, held in July, which features period costume, music and much more.

Enjoy the nearby beaches and outdoor activities on offer

Those who like to take part in sports and leisure activities will find plenty to enjoy around Gavray. There are some lovely beaches just twenty minutes away (Granville sur Mer is a good one). With their accompanying resorts there is endless family fun for all ages. Then there are golf courses, hiking trails, fishing rivers and horse-riding stables. So there's something for everyone, and no excuse for lazing around... unless, of course, that's just what you feel like doing!

Explore Mont St Michel and Bayeux

Just as there are lots of activities close at hand, so there are many fascinating places to visit. Mont St Michel, with its ghostly island abbey church is one of the most famous sights in France, as is the Bayeux Tapestry. You can visit the infamous beaches and battlefields of the World Wars, see the famous cathedral at Coutances, or take time to discover the glories of the 12th century Hambye Abbey. For something a little different, take a trip to the "copper village" of Villedieu les Stoves to see all the crafts associated with this beautiful metal.
