Granville - a family friendly seaside town

The large town of Granville is found in the north of France, on the Contentin Peninsula in Manche, Lower Normandy. It is a family friendly resort with excellent amenities for holidaymakers as well as for long term residents, easily accessed from the UK and within reach of many of the best attractions of the area. Granville has a long and turbulent history, having been the focus of several invasions throughout its existence, some by the English and later, in the Second World War, by the Germans.

Downtown in Granville

There's plenty to see and do in the town, whether you are interested in discovering its history, relaxing on the beaches and swimming in the sea or looking for enjoyable diversions such as restaurants and shops. Sights worth taking in include the harbour, the granite Church of Notre Dame du Cap Lihou, and the old town, still with the original ramparts and grand gateway. The traditional Norman architecture is also prevalent, with many beautiful old buildings to admire in the upper town.

Museums to visit

Granville has a couple of very interesting museums, one of which details the history of the town through a collection of original documents. The second is quite unusual, and is a celebration of the work of one of Granville's most famous sons, the fashion designer Christian Dior.

Amenities available

The town is well supplied with shops, services and accommodation options, with plenty of hotels, chambres d'hotes and camping nearby. It is also possible to find gites and apartments for rental. If you enjoy dining out then Granville is a good destination, as there are a number of excellent restaurants serving superb local seafood.

Clean beaches and seas

Granville is very much a seaside town, and its beaches and clean seas will not disappoint those seeking a traditional bucket and spade style family holiday. Some of the best beaches around the town include Les Salines to the north, which is a sand and pebble beach with a stretch of sand dunes separating it from the mainland. The facilities here are pretty basic, amounting to not much more than toilets and a few snack bars, but the beaches are clean and the area unspoiled. To the south of the town you can find the beaches of Saint Pair sur Mer, Jullouville and Carolles Plage, all with clean golden sands and shallow shelving waters.

Out and about

The obvious place to visit in the vicinity is Mont St Michel, one of the iconic sights of coastal northern France, complete with its stunning Gothic abbey, although you might also plan to see the very upmarket resorts of Deauville and Trouville, or perhaps the Second World War beach of Omaha. There are numerous sports and leisure activities available in the area, with tennis, swimming, cycling, fishing, walking and sailing among the possibilities. Golfers will find themselves spoiled for choice, surrounded by fantastic courses, and fans of horse racing and polo can also enjoy watching the sports of kings at Deauville and Trouville.

How to get there

The nearest airports which offer direct flights from the UK are Dinard and Rennes. Dinard is served by Aurigny and Ryanair, while Rennes is served by Flybe. The ferry ports of Caen, St Malo and Cherbourg are about a 100 kilometre drive from Granville, while fans of train travel can take a train right to the town. The D911 will direct drivers to Granville from a northerly or a southerly approach, while the D924 and D973 access the town from the nearest major road, the A84.

Property prices and availability in and around Granville

Granville lies in a popular part of Normandy, but property here is not as highly priced as in nearby Deauville and Trouville. In fact, there are currently some lovely properties on the market at some astonishingly reasonable prices in this area.
