Le Teilleul - a lively village

Le Teilleul is a lively little village in the Manche, the most northerly department in Lower Normandy in northern France. The village is perfectly located for easy access from the UK, and is within easy reach of Normandy's best attractions such as Mont St Michel, Domfront and the beaches and seaside resorts. The peaceful, rural surroundings are a balm to the soul, and although the weather is similar to that of southern England, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the fresh air, unspoilt countryside and many sports and leisure activities on offer.

Thursday is market day

Le Teilleul has a market every Thursday morning, and although it isn't one of the biggest markets it still provides a delightful shopping experience and a chance to taste and test the delicious local produce for which the region is famed. Think creamy, Camembert cheeses, thick Normandy cream, robust country ciders and rich, aromatic Calvados brandy, and resist if you can!

Other shops found in Le Teilleul

In addition to the market, the village shops are useful for everyday essentials, and include a baker's, a supermarket, a chemist's, a butcher's and a few more small shops. Many more shops and larger facilities are found just up the road in the lovely mediaeval town of Domfront.

Visit the fabulous Mont St Michel

With the fabulous island abbey town of Mont St Michel (one of France's top tourist attractions and most beautiful sights) just a short drive away, there is no shortage of things to do from a base in Le Teilleul. Mont St Michel is an absolute "must see". Don't forget to take a camera as the sight of the island, topped by its stunning, Gothic abbey rising out of the mists and the sea like something from a fairytale, will be something you will always want to remember.

Spend a day at the seaside

Even nearer to home is another lovely place to visit. This is the mediaeval town of Domfront, packed with character and charm as well as having a good selection of shops, services and super bars and restaurants. If you fancy a day out at the seaside, the resort of Granville is perfect, with a family friendly atmosphere and clean beaches with safe bathing.

Why not try hot air ballooning?

Activities in the area include the ever popular walking/hiking, of course, but the countryside is also ideal for horse-riding, cycling, fishing and just packing up a picnic and enjoying the peace. You will also find access to several good golf courses, sailing at the coast, tennis and even hot air ballooning if you feel so inclined.

How to get there

You can travel by air to the Breton airports of Dinard or Rennes. Dinard is served by Ryanair and Aurigny, and Rennes by Flybe. But probably a better way to travel is by boat to St Malo, Caen, Cherbourg or Le Havre. If driving, the town is found on the D32/D134, with the nearest major road being the A84 auto route.

Property prices and availability in and around Le Teilleul

In spite of the increasing popularity of Lower Normandy and the Manche as a destination for second home seekers from home and abroad, property prices are still very good in and around le Teilleul. The market at the time of writing (January 2012) sports a selection of properties with prices ranging from just 60,000 Euros to 213,700 Euros for a stunning longere.
