Mortain - a beautiful market town

Mortain is a beautiful old market town that lies in the Manche department of Lower Normandy, in the north of France. Set in the lovely countryside of the Regional Natural Park of Normandie-Maine, Mortain is noted for its stunning gorges and waterfalls.

Historical with sights to see

The town is historic and has several sites of interest. The collegiate Church of Saint Evroult dates to the 13th century and can be visited, with other religious sites including two chapels and an abbey. Just outside the town are the lovely Cance River gorges, where the Grand Cascade is the largest waterfall in the north of France.

Amenities on offer

In addition to its natural and built heritage, Mortain has a good range of shops, supermarkets and services to cater for everyday needs, with doctors' surgeries and schools for children. The market, held on Fridays, is always fun to attend and a great place to find local specialities. The town also holds special Christmas markets. Fans of dining out in France (and who doesn't love this?) can find various restaurants to try in the town.

Sports and leisure activities to enjoy

Further leisure amenities include a super, heated outdoor pool, lovely country walks and golf and fishing nearby. Other sporting activities available in the area are plentiful and include horse-riding, sailing, cycling and walking.

Visit the coast

Lower Normandy has a great many wonderful places to explore and discover. Although Mortain lies in the south of the Manche, it is still within an easy drive of the coast, and it is here that you can find fabulous resorts such as Granville, with its fishing port and marina; the stunning island town of Mont St Michel (one of the premier attractions in the country!); and beautiful beaches, perfect for bucket and spade family fun.

Visit mediaeval Domfront

Also be sure to visit the copper town of Villedieu les Poeles, mediaeval Domfront and Bayeaux, home to the famous tapestry.

How to get there

You can travel by air to the Breton airports of Dinard or Rennes (Dinard is served by Ryanair and Aurigny, Rennes by Flybe) but probably a better way to travel is by boat to St Malo, Caen, Cherbourg or Le Havre. If driving, the nearest major road to the town is the A84 auto route.

Property prices and availability in and around Mortain

With property prices in the Manche having risen a little in recent years due to the increased popularity of the area, it is good to know that property can be bought very reasonably in and around Mortain. Current prices begin at just 60,000 Euros (January 2012).
