For buying and selling property in Carrouges
There is always something about a town that is topped off by a castle, as is the lively little market town of Carrouges, in the Lower Normandy region. Carrouges has the advantage of being set in delightful, typically lush, Norman countryside, and offers the delights of locally produced cider and creamy Camembert cheese to tempt you to stay. The chateau is impressive, not just a pile of old stones as are so many, sadly, but a real castle that can be visited.
Market day is Wednesday, and that gives you the perfect excuse to become French for a day, pick up your basket and head off to bag yourself the best of the delicious local produce that is offered on the colourful stalls. As this is Normandy, the goodies are especially tasty, with fabulous creamy cheeses such as Camembert, bubbly ciders that make such a perfect partner for cheese, locally grown fruits and veg and much, much more.
Other than the market, Carrouges has a selection of useful local shops, supermarkets, doctors, banks, sports facilities and all the things you need for your everyday life. There are also several good restaurants to enjoy when you feel like letting someone else do the cooking! The pièce de résistance, of course, is the large, grand chateau which is open to the public.
Lower Normandy and the area around Carrouges are packed with things to do and see. There are many World War sites to visit, beautiful beaches, fun-filled seaside resorts and any amount of beautiful, unspoiled country to explore. Local activities include horse-riding, cycling, walking, swimming, sailing, boules, tennis and golf, but there are many more available round and about.
Towns in the area worth a visit are Alençon, the capital of the department, the gorgeous historic town of Argentan, the spa town of Bagnoles de l'Orne, the river port of Honfleur, the seaside resorts of Deauville and Trouville and the beautiful mediaeval town of Domfront.
Fly to Rennes, Tours, Dinard or Paris, or hop on the ferry to any of the northern ferry ports. St Malo, Caen, Le Havre and Cherbourg are nearby. Cherbourg, Evreux and Caen also have TGV stations for those who like to travel by rail. If driving, you will find Carrouges from either the A88 or A28 motorways, and/or the N12.
Carrouges offers some quite reasonably priced property, and a fair variety of property types. If you fancy a little work, you can currently (December 2011) pick up a barn to restore for just 23,000 Euros, but if you want something a little more spacious and ready to live in, there are also some lovely houses on the market.
