Couterne is a very attractive small market town, with plenty of history and heritage. And, it's within easy reach of top tourist spots in the region. Couterne lies in pretty, lush and green countryside, typical of the Orne department.
Couterne has no shortage of amenities, even though it is not a large town. There is a large range of shops, including hairdressers, bakers, newsagents, delis, and even antiques! The town also offers many essential services in the shape of banks, a post office, building firms, doctors and vets.
If you enjoy French markets, don't miss Tuesday mornings in Couterne. The best goods go early, so it's worth setting the alarm. Local produce like creamy Camembert cheeses, strong cider, crepes and butter are always good to buy!
The castle, which dates from the 16th and 18th centuries, is the major landmark of Couterne, but there are several more to see as well. (If you want to visit the castle, you need to check with the Mairie as it is only open to the public on one special day per year. It's definitely worth a visit though!) The town's church was constructed on the site of a much older church, and there is an interesting lavoir. This is an old public wash house that would once have been the focal point of life and gossip for the ladies of the town. More modern features of Couterne include an airfield and a beautiful fishing lake, surrounded by great walking trails.
Couterne is a near neighbour of the famous spa town of Bagnoles sur l'Orne. In Bagnoles you can relax in a spa, or take to the waters of the lake and enjoy a pedal in a pedalo. There's a casino too, if you're feeling lucky. Further places to visit in the locality include France's favourite tourist attraction of Mont St Michel, which must not be missed under any circumstances!
The Orne's lush, green countryside of meadows, hills and forests is a perfect outdoor playground for lovers of cycling, walking or horse-riding. There is a good golf course at Bagnoles, plenty of tennis courts, swimming pools and many other sporting facilities around.
You can travel by air to Dinard or Rennes. Dinard is served by Ryanair and Aurigny, while Rennes is served by Flybe. The nearest ferry ports are found at Caen, Le Havre and St Malo. The port of Calais and the tunnels are also quite accessible. If driving, the town is located on the crossing of the D916 and D976 roads, with the N12 being the nearest major road.
