For buying and selling property in Tessé la Madeleine
Tessé la Madeleine is a village with its own identity and character, yet it is also often described as a part of Bagnoles de l'Orne (the Tessé la Madeleine quarter). The village's residents prefer to maintain their commune as a separate entity and even have a Facebook page declaring this! It can't be denied, however, that the village of Tessé does indeed benefit from its proximity to the very popular spa resort of Bagnoles, which offers excellent facilities, shops, services and entertainment.
The most outstanding feature of Tessé la Madeleine is without doubt the magnificent chateau that is now pressed into service as one of the grandest Town Halls in France. Built in Renaissance style, this vast and very beautiful chateau was actually built by a wealthy heiress in 1855. The chateau has a glorious and extensive park complete with many rare trees.
Other than that, the village is well kept and attractive, and offers a supermarket, several butchers and bakers shops, clothes and shoe shops and a variety of other local shops and services. Anything you need that can't be found in Tessé is easily accessed about a mile up the road in Bagnoles.
Lower Normandy is bursting with things to do and see. There are World War sites to visit, beautiful beaches, fun-filled seaside resorts and any amount of beautiful, unspoiled country to explore. Local activities include horse-riding, cycling, walking, swimming, sailing, boules, tennis and golf, but there are many more available nearby. The mediaeval town of Domfront is a favourite, and well worth a visit, while smart, chic and lively seaside towns like Deauville are also within reach.
Staying close to home, Bagnoles de l'Orne is a must. The spa town has been a popular resort since the magical restorative properties of its waters were allegedly discovered by an old horse named Rapide, who had been turned away to die in the forest by his owner, the local Lord. Legend has it that the horse drank of the waters in the forest and, being rejuvenated, returned to spread the news by taking his master to test the waters for himself. The waters had a similarly magical effect on the Lord, and the fame of Bagnoles spread far and wide, resulting in the lovely spa town we know today. There town is well equipped for tourism, and in addition to its spa treatments it offers shopping, restaurants, bars, cafés and cultural events.
Travelling by air offers the choice of arriving at the airports of Rennes, Dinard, Tours or Paris, but possibly the better way to travel is by boat or rail. Ferries arrive from Britain at Caen, Le Havre, St Malo or Cherbourg, while trains will take you to Evreux, Caen or Cherbourg. If you are driving, the nearest major roads are the N12 and A88.
Prices tend to be pretty reasonable in and around Tessé la Madeleine, perhaps a little lower than those in the better known neighbouring town of Bagnoles.
