The small town of Tinchebray, which is found in the Orne department of Lower Normandy, rejoices in its mediaeval heritage. Pretty and unspoilt yet bustling with life and with good amenities, Tinchebray is ideally located for access to all the attractions of north-west France. With nearby ferry ports and airports offering easy travel from the UK, it makes a great location for a holiday home.
Amongst its mediaeval buildings and heritage sites, Tinchebray also offers good local shops and amenities. There's a cinema, several bars and restaurants too. Tinchebray doesn't have a regular street market, but there's no need to worry. If markets are your thing (and who doesn't love a good French market?) there are two great market towns nearby at Vire and Flers.
The town lists no less than ten sites of interest on its heritage site. These include such diverse items as churches and chapels, flour and paper mills, an ancient prison and a College of Chocolaterie! There are many charming mediaeval buildings in the town too.
The pretty bocage countryside surrounds the town, and walking, cycling and horse-riding are all great ways to enjoy it. Nearby you'll find rivers and lakes for fishing, swimming, kayaking and boating. With all the lovely countryside around, you'll never be short of ideas for days out in the open air. Numerous sports are available (nearby Flers has a delightful golf course), and if you've got kids in tow there are zoos and leisure lakes to entertain them within an easy drive of the town. The sea is only an hour away as well, so sunny summer days can be spent on the beach if the fancy takes you. If you want to stay nearer to home, but still like the idea of a swim, why not visit the excellent aquatic centre at Vire?
There are many ways to get to Tinchebray. If you like the ease of air travel, you can fly to Dinard, Rennes or Paris. Train travel brings you to Evreux, Le Havre or Caen, while the ferry ports of Caen, Cherbourg, Le Havre and St Malo are all possibilities too if you enjoy travelling by boat. For those who prefer to go by car, you can drive onto the cross channel train and off again in Calais, and continue by road from there. The nearest major roads are the A84 and A88.
You'll be pleasantly surprised by what you can get for your money in Tinchebray. 2013 has seen a fall in prices in much of France, so it's really an ideal time to snap up a bargain.
