Criel sur Mer sits in a privileged position beside the lovely coast of Upper Normandy in northern France. Once a village known mainly for fishing and agriculture, Criel sur Mer's fortunes turned with the creation of its railway station in 1872. Tourism swiftly followed, and Criel sur Mer is now a popular and attractive seaside resort.

Archaeological finds have shown that the village's history dates back at least to Gallo Roman times. However, its heritage sights include many later buildings.
