For buying and selling property in Bais
Bais is a small market town which lies in the Mayenne department in the north of the Pays de la Loire region. The town is set in lovely countryside with access to leisure lakes, beautiful hiking trails, historic towns and many more attractions. Bais has its own notable heritage too. In the town you can find a lovely chateau, old lavoirs (public wash houses), a beautiful church and an old chapel.
Bais may have just under 1,400 residents, but is well equipped to serve them with a selection of small shops and local services. Within the town you can find most of the usual shops, and an excellent range of services such as schools, doctors, vets, pharmacies and banks. There are also several good bars and restaurants and a great public swimming pool, brilliant for letting the kids cool off in summer. The market is held on Wednesdays, and is a super place to while away an hour or two, looking around the colourful stalls and picking up local specialities.
The Mayenne is often overlooked by holidaymakers and property seekers in the rush to the coast, but it is a fabulous department with vast amounts of things to see and do. Bais has a delightfully rural setting, so is perfect for anyone who enjoys the fresh air and the countryside and the many pursuits associated with that. It is great for walkers, horse riders and cyclists, as the department is so unspoilt and tranquil. There are lakes and rivers for fishing, swimming and boating, and plenty of places to play tennis, boules or simply to enjoy a picnic.
The principle town of Laval is well worth a visit, while near to Bais is the fascinating Jublains, with its Gallo Roman remains and Archaeological Museum. Evron is another town not to be missed, as it is here you will find a stunning Benedictine abbey.
The closest airports are Rennes, Dinard and Tours, but you could also fly to Nantes or Paris, although these are further away. Rennes is served by Flybe, Dinard by Aurigny and Ryanair, and Tours by Ryanair. Another option is to take the ferry to Caen, St Malo, Le Havre or Cherbourg. If driving, the town is found not far from the N12 non toll motorway, on the D35. The nearest auto routes are the A81 and A28.
In general, property in the Mayenne is quite reasonable, although it does suffer a little in this respect from its accessibility to Paris, as Parisian second home seekers look to the countryside for a retreat from the city. However, prices aren't bad, and there are some lovely properties on the market at the time of writing (January 2012), with prices ranging from 100,000 Euros to 166,000 Euros.
