The town of Château du Loir has neither a chateau, nor is it on the River Loir, strictly speaking, so it is a town that occasions speculation as to exactly how it gained its name! (It is however, very close to the River Loir.) It is a very appealing, medium sized and well equipped town, situated in the very beautiful department of the Sarthe, in western France.

The sights and sounds of Château du Loir

Château du Loir has an interesting church, classified as a historical monument. The church is the Eglise Guingalois, and it has a 10th century crypt and an 18th century organ. The town itself is lively and attractive, with all amenities, and there are supermarkets, local shops, leisure activities, bars and restaurants.

Out and about

Château du Loir is well located for further exploration of the region, and the Loire valley is certainly worth exploring. Visit towns like La Flèche, with its excellent zoo, take a trip to the famous motor racing circuit of Le Mans, and generally enjoy travelling around this fabulous area with its rivers and chateaux. The city of Tours is great for a day in town, with excellent shopping and cultural facilities.

How to get there

Tours is the nearest airport, and this offers flights from the UK with Ryanair. Angers is also within reach, which is served by Eastern Airways. Rail travel is also possible, with Eurostar taking you to Paris, and the TGV running into Tours. If you are driving you will find the town from the A11 or the A28.
