Easily accessed by road, rail and air, the town makes a great base for holidays. And it's close to lots of the region's main attractions too. The river, and the glorious countryside that surrounds it, offer a host of outdoor activities, and the town itself has excellent amenities.
Châteauneuf sur Sarthe is somewhere between a village and a small town. Its population of just over 3,000 is quite small, but the amenities are excellent, with many shops, a supermarket, restaurants and cafés. What's more, the town is just 20 miles from the capital city of Angers. Châteauneuf also has all the essential services such as doctors, dentists, schools and tradesmen. The atmosphere in the town is generally laid back and calm, very much in keeping with French rural life! But there's plenty to see and do.
Châteauneuf's history has produced some interesting heritage to discover. The church is listed, and definitely worth a visit. Also take a look at the bridge, the Pont Geoffroy le Bel Plantagenet, the old mill with its tall chimney and the Château de la Verrouillere, which can be visited on special occasions. Don't miss a visit to the River House, a fascinating museum for all the family. Then there are the lime kilns, just outside the town as well, so there's plenty here to keep you occupied!
Châteauneuf is positively bursting with ideas for keeping active, whoever you are and whatever you enjoy. The river allows for the possibilities of fishing and boating as well as delightful riverside walks. Close to the town are two great golf courses: Golf de Sable and the Anjou Golf and Country Club, both within less than half an hour's drive. The town also boasts a great swimming pool and an equestrian centre. If you pop along to Angers, you'll find even more options. The Lac de Maine has various water sports including windsurfing, sailing, canoeing and swimming, plus orienteering and hiking.
The Maine et Loire department and the region of the Pays de la Loire offer lots of great days out. A visit to the capital city of Angers is a must. There's so much to enjoy in this beautiful city - heritage, culture, beauty and a great atmosphere. For something completely different, Le Mans, with its famous motor racing events is just 50 miles away, so this is also a possibility if you're around at the right time.
Don't forget, this region is noted for its wines, so visits to the vineyards and wine houses are always possible. Wine tasting can be arranged by many vineyards, local tourist offices can supply details. It's also chateau country, with many of these wonderful castles and grand homes being open to the public. Saumur is a good one to see, and the town is fascinating too, especially for horse lovers as it has a fantastic equestrian tradition.
It's really easy to get to Châteauneuf sur Sarthe. Several airports are within reach, with Angers (20 miles) being the closest. Others you might choose are Rennes, Nantes and Tours. You can also travel by TGV to any of the nearby main cities above, then link to a local train to nearby Tierce, which is just over 6 miles away. Finally, drivers can access the town via the A11 motorway, leaving at exit 11, or the N162. It lies on the D859.
While the Maine et Loire department is not one of France's cheapest departments for property, it is definitely worth a look. The town of Châteauneuf sur Sarthe and the surrounding areas have some wonderful properties on offer, and the prices may be more reasonable than you'd expect.
