Conlie is a peaceful country town found in the gentle Sarthe countryside near to the championship motor racing track of Le Mans. The town was once a notoriously tough training camp for military personnel during the Franco Prussian War, but today the quality of life in Conlie is much improved. Now it is more concerned with its shops and restaurants, its weekly market, its provision of education, sports and leisure activities and the beauty of its surroundings.
Conlie has several elegant old buildings, notably its church (which is a protected monument) and its graceful Town Hall. The town's War Museum is always interesting to visit too. A further attractive feature of the town is the lovely Plan d'Eau, or reservoir lake and the beautiful Forest of Sillé which lies near the town.
Peaceful and rural it may be, but Conlie can also be pleasantly bustling, especially on Wednesday mornings when the traditional style French market arrives and everybody takes their baskets and heads down to the Place des Halles to bag the fresh local produce on offer. If you miss the market, though, there is no need to worry as Conlie has plenty of ordinary ships and even supermarkets to provide all the things you need.
Leisure time is well catered for in Conlie too, with sporting activities available for all, in addition to several excellent restaurants and bars. Families with children have a choice of private or state primary schools in the town, and older children can attend the college, only having to move out of town when they reach the lycée stage of education.
While the peace and beauty of the countryside is evident all around Conlie, travel just a few kilometres and you can find a very different story. The roar of the engines, the smell of racing fuel in the air and the excitement of speed are all found very nearby at the world famous championship motor racing track of Le Mans, home to the fabulous 24-hour car and motorcycle races. Owning a gite in Conlie can be very profitable at the times of the races, as aficionados of the races will be looking for a place to stay, when local hotels become full. And Le Mans has far more to offer than just its race track, being a listed "town of art and history" with a rich heritage to explore.
Other than Le Mans, Sarthe has many attractions. Character towns like Fresnay sur Sarthe and the beautiful La Fleche are well worth visiting. Meanwhile the Sarthe countryside is perfect for walking, cycling, horse-riding, fishing and water sports.
Airports within reasonable reach of Conlie include Tours and Rennes. Tours is served by Ryanair, and Rennes by Flybe. Meanwhile the train station in the town has links to the TGV stop in Le Mans. If you are driving you can find Conlie nor far from the A28 or A81 auto routes.
Property prices in and around Conlie remain reasonable, with possibilities to purchase property for less than 100,000 Euros still existing. The rural surroundings also provide opportunities to find farmhouse style properties with extensive gardens.
