The town of Le Lude is a typically French market town lying in the elegant winelands of the Loire, to the north-west of central France in the department of Sarthe. Especially renowned for its fabulous castle, the Château du Lude, the town has a lively centre and a thriving economy. Le Lude is a lively town with a good collection of amenities. Dining out is a real joy, as you can choose from a number of very good restaurants, serving delicious local speciality dishes. There are all the shops you could hope to find, including wonderfully French boulangeries which send out their tantalising aromas of freshly baked baguettes at all hours of the day. Then there are the fruit and veg shops bursting with shiny, colourful produce and the wine caves temptingly stacked high with their dusty bottles of the best and most expensive wines and the huge barrels of the cheap and cheerful wines. Then there are supermarkets and all the usual service industries too, making the living easy in the summertime or whatever the season!
Every Thursday sees the arrival of a traditional outdoor market, and on certain summer evenings the town also puts on atmospheric night markets, where local crafts and special delicacies are on display.
The Château du Lude is an absolutely superb example of the fairytale castles of the Loire, and is really worth a viewing. It is open to the public on March 22nd, 23rd and 24th, and then from April 1st until September 30th, with a few exceptions. Originally constructed as a fortress in the 10th century, the chateau you see today belongs to the same noble family who have owned it for the last 250 years, and who have made its restoration and care their lives' work. Resplendent inside with important works of art and some fine antique furnishings, the castle is equally impressive outside with huge, breathtakingly beautiful gardens and an imposing and beautiful exterior. Allow at least a day to explore and marvel!
