Mamers - an important market town

Mamers is perhaps in itself not one of the Sarthe's most celebrated tourist towns, but it is an important market town which has a vibrant community life and excellent facilities. It is set in the lovely Sarthe countryside, an area of forests, lakes, rivers and rolling hills, and makes a good base for visiting the main attractions of the region such as the character town of Le Mans, famed too for its motor races.

See the town's market hall and Eiffel Tower reproduction

The town's pride and joy is its superbly preserved old market hall, a covered structure that stands in the main market square and which is still very much used today on Monday mornings when Mamers holds its street markets in time honoured French style. Another intriguing feature found in Mamers is the reproduction of the Eiffel Tower, not quite to the same scale, but fascinating all the same! The town also boasts two mediaeval churches.

Well equipped with everything you need

Mamers is a fairly large town, and has a very good spread of shops and restaurants to explore and enjoy. It also offers all the usual service industries, schools, health services and sporting and cultural facilities.

Visit Le Mans for its heritage, culture and racing

Motor racing fans will want to pay a visit to the world famous track at nearby Le Mans, which is worth seeing even if there isn't a race in progress at the time. If this doesn't grab you though, the town of Le Mans itself is well worth a day or two of your time as there is lots to see and do. It's listed as a "town of art and history", so there will be heritage and culture a plenty.

Explore picturesque villages and the unspoiled countryside

Out in the countryside numerous possibilities present themselves. Picturesque towns and villages such as Fresnay sur Sarthe and La Perrière are charming to see, but if it is the pure, unspoiled countryside you want to make the most of, you will find endless things to enjoy. The Sarthe has woodlands, lakes, rivers and hills, so it is an idyllic destination for hikers, pony trekking fans, cyclists and lovers of nature.

How to get there

The airports of Paris, Rennes or Tours are all within reasonable travelling distance of Mamers, with Paris being served by a multitude of airlines, Rennes by Flybe and Tours by Ryanair. Meanwhile rail travellers can simply hop onto a TGV to arrive in Le Mans in double quick time. The A28 motorway is the nearest major road to the town, with the N12 also running close by.

Property prices and availability in and around Mamers

The property market around Mamers offers a wide variety of property and an equally wide variety of prices. It is currently possible (November 2011) to pick up a village house, ready to move into, for just 71,980 Euros, or if you have a little more to spend you might choose a lovely country home complete with land and outbuildings, at a very reasonable 340,000 Euros.
