Pré en Pail is a lively market town set amid the pretty, green countryside of the Mayenne department in the northern Pays de la Loire. In addition to its excellent weekly market, held in the streets of the town in the traditional fashion, Pré en Pail has a good number of shops and services to offer, and has recently added a brand new supermarket to make life even easier for its residents and visitors. Nearby are the lakes, rivers and rolling countryside typical of this region, while the Normandy coast is just a short distance away.
Pré en Pail is a good sized town, and it has everything you could hope to find within its boundaries. Shops, supermarkets, bars, cafés and restaurants are all there, as are schools, banks, doctors and many other services. Market day is Saturday, so be sure to set the alarm and be there early to catch the best of the bargains and enjoy the atmosphere of a real French street market. Pré en Pail also has a heated swimming pool, great for letting the kids use up that excess energy, and there are several good fishing lakes nearby. Permits can be purchased in the town.
Getting out and about yet staying close to Pré en Pail takes you to the charming spa town of Bagnoles de l' Orne, with sophisticated shops, restaurants and spa treatments to enjoy. The lovely town of Lassay les Chateaux, with its ruined castles is also nearby, while others worth a visit include the lace-making town of Alençon and the fabulous mediaeval Laval.
Heritage lovers should pay a visit to the Château of Carrouges, just some ten minutes from the town, and to the old lookout tower located just outside Pré en Pail, which is the highest point in the area and which offers amazing views of the surrounding countryside.
If you enjoy days at the seaside, take a drive up to the lovely beaches and lively resorts of the Lower Normandy coast. Or get outdoors and active and play golf on one of the several good courses available, go horse-riding, get on your bike to make the most of the quiet country lanes or simply take to Shanks pony to stretch your legs and enjoy the scenery.
Travelling by ferry to Caen or St Malo is a good way to access the area, but you can also take a ferry to Cherbourg or Le Havre. Alternatively, if you prefer to fly, the airports of Rennes, Dinard, Nantes, Tours and even Paris are all within reach. Rennes is served by Flybe; Dinard by Ryanair; Nantes by Flybe, easyJet, Ryanair and Air France; Tours by Ryanair; and Paris by a multitude of airlines. The TGV will get you to Le Mans, should you prefer the train, and if driving, drivers should follow the N12, along which Pré en Pail can be found.
In spite of its popularity with Parisians wishing to enjoy peaceful weekends in the country not too far from the capital, property prices in the Mayenne remain very reasonable, with some excellent bargains to be found. The area around Pré en Pail is particularly of interest to those seeking property for under 100,000 Euros, as some great properties are currently for sale around the town for figures below this sum.
