For buying and selling property in Sarthe
The predominantly agricultural department of Sarthe is found in the north of the Loire valley. It has three distinct parts to it. In the north you'll find the regional park with its undulating landscape of dark forests and steep hills. The centre of the department is more open but dotted with pine trees. Finally, the south is the winegrowing region with its vineyards and idyllic countryside. Sarthe is one of the largest producers of both Barley and Hemp in France.
Le Mans is the capital of the department. It is a city somewhat overshadowed by its annual 24 hour motor race, which is watched by people from all over the world. Less people are aware of its historic town centre surrounded by the best preserved Gallo-Roman walls outside of Rome and with fantastic views out over the Sarthe River.
Le Mans is to be found on a rocky outcrop with an impressive cathedral looming over it from the other side of the river. Its many buttresses give it a chaotic and awesome look from the outside. For motor-enthusiasts, the famous circuit and its museum are to be found to the south of the town.
La Fleche, in the very south of the department, is home to the Prytanée military academy, which is popular with tourists. It was founded by the first Bourbon King, Henry IV, but became the elite military school it is today under Napoleon. The town is situated alongside the River Loir (not to be confused with the Loire).
Memers, right in the north of Sarthe, is a pretty town with some charming 19th Century architecture. Most of these were built off the staggering profits being made from the production of hemp at the time.
The department is fairly close to both Paris and the northern coast and so travelling there is not very difficult. If you'd rather go by land then you can either take the Eurostar to Paris and then catch the TGV to Le Mans or you could take a ferry to Le Havre, Ouistrehem (Caen), Cherbourg or St-Malo. If you're flying in then you can choose between Tours, Angers, Rennes or Paris airports.
Property in the region remains good value for money. Le Mans' rental market, however, is only really active around the annual race as most visitors prefer to stay in the warmer valleys nearby.
