Within roughly half an hour of the coast, Aizenay allows you to enjoy the seaside fun when you want to, yet also to escape the crowds and to find a picturesque countryside where excessive tourism does not intrude.
Aizenay is a very pretty market town, retaining a calm and unspoiled air yet offering excellent shops, restaurants and other facilities. The traditional street market is undoubtedly one of Aizenay's attractions, and this takes place on the first and third Monday of every month. For more contemporary pleasures, Aizenay offers a cinema, a library and numerous sporting and cultural associations. The town is also notable for its colourful parks and gardens.
Aizenay is a great place for a party! In true French style, the town hosts a number of cultural events, fêtes and festivals, especially in the summer months when the streets resound to the sounds of music and people having a wonderful time. Foodies too, will love Aizenay, which is very proud of its local gourmet specialities and excellent restaurants.
The location of Aizenay dictates its quality of life. Set in a scenic part of the Vendée, between beautiful lakes and the forest that dominates the area, Aizenay offers a delightful quality of life surrounded by natural beauty. There are so many activities that you can enjoy around this little town. Cyclists love the tracks that wander through the trees, as do walkers and horse riders. Fishermen can indulge their passion for fishing in the lakes, and these also provide facilities for swimming, sunbathing and boating. The town has two sports complexes and an outdoor swimming pool, perfect for cooling off during the warm, sunny summers enjoyed in the region.
It only takes about half an hour to get to the coast, and the popular resort of Les Sables d'Olonnes always provides a family fun day out. The picturesque and unusual village of Apremont, which is built into the rocky hillsides that rise from the valley floor, is also a great place to visit. It has the advantage of being set beside an old chateau and a superb leisure lake that will keep you happily occupied for the whole day. Meanwhile the bustling port town of La Rochelle, just to the south in the Charente-Maritime department, is easily accessed from Aizenay, and offers yet another fascinating facet of life in western France.
Aizenay is within easy reach of several airports which offer direct flights to and from the UK. La Rochelle, with flights with budget airlines Ryanair, flybe and easyJet is very handy, or you could fly to Poitiers with Ryanair. Nantes and Angers are also within reach. Nantes has flights with Ryanair and Aer Arann, while Angers is served by Eastern Airways. If you prefer the train, the super fast TGV stops at Poitiers, and if you are driving, and it is advisable to have a car to make the most of the area around Aizenay, you will find the town at the point where the D6, D948 and D978 roads converge. The closest major roads are the A83 and A87.
Although the Vendée tends to be a fairly expensive place to buy property, the inland areas of the department offer better bargains. Currently on the market is a fully renovated, three-bedroom property at only 177,000 Euros, and an exciting investment project, a fabulous seven-bedroom Vendéen house, habitable but requiring updating, for only 190,000 Euros.

Aizenay is located on the west of France, 30 minutes inland from the Atlantic coast. It lies in the west of the Vendée department.

Access: By air: Fly to La Rochelle, Nantes, Angers or Poitiers with a variety of airlines. By rail: Travel by Eurostar to Paris then change to a TGV to Poitiers. By road: Drivers will find the town where the D6, D948 and D978 roads draw together.
Economy: The economy of Aizenay is mixed and dynamic, with industry, agriculture, commerce and tourism significant as well as the more traditional activities of forestry and production of local gourmet foods.
Interesting fact: Aizenay has a notable coat of arms that dates back to the 15th century, which has links to an old established local family, the Desbrosses Panthivière family.
