The small market town of Angles is found amidst the lovely countryside of the Vendée department of western France, close to the Atlantic coast and on the edge of the Marais Poitevin marshes and waterways. Angles is typically French, with soft, grey stone buildings built in the traditional style, a lovely church as its centrepiece, and a vibrant twice weekly market. The town is ideally located for accessing the numerous attractions of the region.
Angles has just around 2,000 inhabitants, but there's plenty going on in this little town. The shops can cater for most of your everyday needs, with a good range of small shops, a supermarket, bars and restaurants. During the summer months the town benefits from a twice weekly market, held on Wednesdays and Sundays, so you can enjoy this typically French way of shopping for your fresh fruit and veg, local wines and cheeses, house wares, plants and even the latest fashions.
Angles is also home to a lovely church, so often the centrepiece of rural French towns and villages, and this Plantagenet-style building is interesting enough both inside and out to make it worth a visit. Angles hosts some fabulously colourful festivals too, ranging from "moules-frites" meals at a communal table in the village square to jazz concerts, firework displays and children's events, so ask at the town's Office de Tourisme to find out the schedule and how to book tickets if required.
Angles is supremely well placed for access to all the very best of the region's attractions. The seaside resort of La Tranche sur Mer is almost on the doorstep, at less than a ten-minute drive away. Here you can find clean, golden sands, a sunny microclimate (worthy of the south of France) and great family entertainment. Not much further afield are the calm and scenic waterways of the Marais Poitevin and stunning vistas of vineyards, sunflowers and poppies, depending on the season.
Kids will be kept thoroughly entertained by days out at a quad track, an Indian Forest Adventure Park, the Aquarium at La Rochelle or (and this one's not just for the kids) the spectacular light and sound shows of Puy de Fou. Golfers can choose from no less than five great courses easily reached from Angles, while walkers, cyclists and horse-riders will be in seventh heaven discovering this lovely area in their chosen way.
The airports and railway stations of Nantes, La Rochelle and Poitiers all make accessing Angles straightforward, but it really is advisable to have a car to make the most of your stay, so if you are arriving by plane or train do consider hiring a car. La Rochelle is the nearest airport and is served by Flybe, Ryanair, easyJet and Jet2; Nantes is served by Air France, Ryanair and easyJet; and Poitiers is served by Ryanair. For those with a car, Angles lies near the D747/D70, with the A83 being the nearest major road.
Vendéen property can be expensive if you choose a seaside area, but travelling just a short way inland to a town such as Angles does cut the costs a little. There are plenty of good properties currently on the market, and, at the time of writing, prices are very reasonable.
