Luçon is found on the Atlantic coast of France in the department known as the Vendée. Its position close to the sea and its warm sunny climate make it a favourite for tourists in the summer season, which is good news for anyone looking to purchase property for holiday letting or chambre d'hôtes. The town is richly historic and elegant, yet also offers every modern convenience you are likely to require. Once upon a long time ago, Luçon was an important port, and although there is little sign of this in the flat reclaimed land that surrounds the town now, you can still see some of the old port buildings.
This market town is known for its superb Gothic cathedral. Resplendent in white stone, this beautiful edifice stands dominant in Luçon, and revels in its history as the stronghold of Cardinal Richelieu. The Cathedral of Notre Dame is open to visitors, and is definitely worth a little of your time. See also the Bishop's palace, and enjoy the sense of history that these buildings bring to present day Luçon. Another glorious asset which Luçon possesses is the acclaimed Jardins de Dumaine. These beautiful gardens with a lake and fabulous floral displays, are an oasis of peace and tranquillity.
Luçon is a town which offers up many pleasures, and not least among these is its selection of colourful shops, cafés and restaurants. Twice a week the market comes to town, so on Thursdays and Saturdays there is every reason in the world to shake off your torpor and leap out of bed at the crack of dawn, to grab the freshest and the best of local produce and delicious seafood. For non market days, or for those big weekly shopping hauls, there are large supermarkets which sell everything including furniture, televisions and garden trees!
In terms of culture, Luçon has plenty going on. There is a theatre and a cinema, and the town hosts several art and music festivals during the year. For the active, many sports can be accessed in or near Luçon, so everyone should be kept fit and busy. There is golf nearby, a pool in the town itself, and a network of bridleways and cycle paths in the surrounding countryside that positively invite you to take up horse-riding and cycling. Water sports enthusiasts can also find a massive 105-acre lake close to Luçon where sailing and canoeing are on offer.

The Vendée is a popular area whose beaches and climate have long commended themselves to British holiday makers, so expect some competition when you spot your dream home on the market. You can still pick up a bargain if you are quick, but prices are rising all the time due to interest from Parisian buyers who are seeking an escape from the city.
