The village of Mouilleron en Pareds sits proudly on top of a hill, owning unbeatable views over the land below. It's the birthplace of not one, but two war heroes, (Georges Clemenceau and Marshal Jean Joseph Marie Gabriel de Lattre de Tassigny), and is also notable for its excellent museum. Mouilleron en Pareds has another attribute though. It makes a wonderful place to have a holiday home. The sunshine and beauty of the countryside of the Vendée, the accessibility of the seaside and the ease of travel from the UK, all add to the appeal of this pretty village.
In addition to its heritage (which is celebrated in the museum, "Musée National Des Deux Victoir"), Mouilleron en Pareds offers a delightful slice of French country life. Although, for the main part, it's a very sleepy and peaceful village, Mouilleron has a very useful collection of small shops and services. Here you can find a boulangerie, a general store, a bar tabac, restaurants, pharmacy and a bank. There's a tourist information office too, which has a wealth of literature to help you discover events taking place nearby, and suggesting the best of the local attractions. It may also be handy to know that Mouilleron has a dentist and a doctor's - because you never know! The more sporty minded can make use of the tennis courts and boules courts in the summer season too.
If you're wanting to stay around Mouilleron, however, there's loads of choices. Fishing is possible at Lac Rochereau, and at Moncoutant you can try your hand at go-karting if you have a yen for speed. For those who like to take their pleasures at a slower pace, the nearby Forest of Mervent offers many beautiful walking trails. Local riding stables are also on hand to allow you the option of exploring the forest from the back of a horse. The area also boasts several golf courses. Finally, the Theme Park of Puy de Fou is just half an hour from Mouilleron, and in season hosts spectacular shows.
Whether it's your first time in the Vendée or you know the department well, you'll find a wealth of things to do. The nearest beaches are found at just an hour's drive away, so there are lots of opportunities to enjoy seaside days out with the family. La Rochelle is an exciting and vibrant port town, while Ile de Ré is a lovely and unique place to visit.
The airports of Nantes, La Rochelle and Poitiers all have direct flights to and from the UK. TGV trains also run to these cities, as well as to the smaller town of La Roche sur Yon, which is even closer. The ferry ports of St Malo and Caen are the nearest, at around a four-hour drive from Mouilleron. Drivers will find the village from the D949B, on the D8/D89.
You might expect property in the Vendée to come in at a high price due to its location near the Atlantic coast and as it's such a great tourist destination. However, if you're looking slightly inland, at villages such as Mouilleron en Pareds, you may be very pleasantly surprised. For not much more than 50,000 Euros, you could own your little piece of the Vendée here. For that money, you may have to do a little renovation work, but you'll still end up with a bargain. Immediately habitable village houses can be picked up for under 100,000 Euros, while at the higher end of the market you could grab yourself a very enviable country residence and still pay less than 500,000 Euros.
