The town of Mouilleron le Captif is a large town situated in the west of France, in the popular holiday destination of the Vendée. Situated ideally for accessing all the major attractions of the region, the town is lively and well equipped to satisfy all the needs and requirements of a modern lifestyle, whilst having an interesting history and culture. Mouilleron le Captif is much larger then its original form as its appeal and great location has led to the building of a number of modern housing estates around the old centre, thus increasing the population considerably and giving a dynamic feel to the town.
It is impossible to hear the name of this town and not to wonder about its origins. Legend has it that the seigneur of Mouilleron was taken prisoner by a neighbouring lord, and forced, during his imprisonment, to humiliate himself by pushing the millstone to grind corn for his new master. Hence he became known as the "Captive Miller" and the name was soon transferred to the town.
Mouilleron le Captif has a good variety of shops and services, including schools, banks, garages and health care. It also has restaurants where you can enjoy the distinctive cuisine of the Vendée. Vendéen life is very much bound up with the sea, and although Mouilleron le Captif lies a short distance inland it is still within easy reach of the fabulous Vendée coast with all its lively resort towns and beautiful beaches. Drivers will find the town located near the D937, which can be accessed from the A83.
