For buying and selling property in Pouzauges
The town of Pouzauges, which is found on a hill in the undulating countryside of the Bocage country in western France, is a picturesque and unspoiled Vendée market town. Its striking red rooftops make for a most attractive skyline, and the views across the surrounding countryside are stunning, as the town stands on one of the highest points in the region.
Pouzauges, despite its unspoiled and rural nature, lacks for nothing in the way of modern amenities. The town offers a selection of shops, good sized supermarkets and other facilities such as banks, restaurants and bars. The weekly market is excellent, with a colourful stalls arriving early and setting out their wares in the time honoured fashion. For a true taste of French life don't hang around and lie in bed 'til late, for the locals know that the freshest and best goods are sold early in the morning, and this is the time to see a real slice of Vendéen life in action.
Pouzauges is famous for its 12th century castle, which really dominates the town. Pouzauges, in common with much of the Vendée, was a staunch supporter of the royal family during the French revolution, and suffered for this after the revolutionaries triumphed. Around the chateau are beautiful gardens where you can walk or enjoy a picnic. Pouzauges also has an attractive and historic church, the Eglise St Jacques.
The town has some gastronomic specialities which are really worth breaking the diet for. The best known is probably Brioche, a rich, sweet buttery bread flavoured with eau de Vie or with orange water. Try also Mogettes, beans grown in traditional style in the Bocage, which are particularly good served with locally cured ham. Finally, how about a taste of Prèfou, a soft dough rubbed with cloves of garlic, buttered and eaten piping hot fresh from the oven. Hungry yet?
The town lies in an area known as the Bocage, which is the highest ground in the Vendée, and which undulates with hills, woods and meadows. This agricultural landscape is a joy to explore on foot, horseback or by bicycle, and you will find that you notice more if you use these slow, quiet, methods of transport than if you simply take the car. If you are seeking entertainment, however, the famous Puy de Fou with its stunning displays, exhibitions and "spectacs" as the French call them, is nearby. Pre-booking can be a good idea in busy times, and you can find something to interest the whole family here. At night time the laser light shows are truly worth seeing! Pouzauges is also close enough to the sea to make this another possibility for day trips, with La Rochelle and the Ile de Ré to the south of Pouzauges particularly note worthy.
Pouzauges is within easy reach of several airports which offer direct flights to and from the UK. Try La Rochelle, with flights with budget airlines Ryanair, flybe and easyJet, or fly to Poitiers with Ryanair. Nantes is also within reach, and has flights with GB Airways, Ryanair and Aer Arann. Poitiers is a town which has a TGV stop too, so it is handy if you wish to travel by these excellent fast trains.
In general, property in the Vendée can tend to be pricey, as the area is justifiably popular, having become increasingly sought after in recent years. Pouzauges, however, is a little more reasonably priced than the coastal towns, so it can be a good place to begin your search if you are seeking property in this area and don't have a massive budget.
